Job summary
We are looking for a Lead Critical Care Scientist at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the largest healthcare provider in southwest London and one of the UK's major teaching hospitals.
The Lead Critical Care Scientist is the scientific, technical and managerial leader for the Critical Care Technology team, who are responsible for the safe and effective provision of medical technology in critical care areas, Emergency Department, and other wards dependent on critical equipment. The team are physically based in each of these areas as resident technical experts. The Lead Critical Care Scientist provides the team with vision, guidance and governance, and encourages active research and quality improvement activity at every level of the team according to Good Scientific Practice.
The team also hosts Critical Care Science trainees on the prestigious and competitive Scientist Training Programme.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be in charge of the Critical Care Technology team. The team sits within the Clinical Engineering section of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department. The section is responsible for providing a range of medical equipment management and governance services as required by the Trust and by national guidance and law.The post is for a highly skilled, experienced and self-motivated Critical Care Scientist to lead and line manage the team of technologists, toensure that medical devices used in the care of critically ill patients are safe and effective, and to provide support in the application of the devicesat the patient's bedside.
The post involves working with other healthcare professionals in clinical areas and across the Trust, so excellent communication skills areessential. You will need to deliver and coordinate training to clinical staff and your team as necessary. You will be expected to form relationshipswith the clinical leads in all areas covered by the team.You must be familiar with a range of medical devices used in critical care environments, particularly ventilators, monitoring and infusion devices,and should have experience of providing technical support at the bedside. Previous experience in leading a group of engineers or technologists ina challenging and busy department is a distinct advantage.

St George's Hospital hosts one of the largest critical care services in the UK. This includes three major adult intensive care units, multiple satellitecritical care areas, and paediatric and neonatal ICUs. Qualifications and registration
Essential
- BSc/BEng in a relevant engineering subject such as engineering or nursing, and/or relevant clinical/technical/scientific degree, or equivalent experience
- Demonstrably working towards registration as a Clinical Scientist (via any recognised route)
Desirable
- MSc or MEng Degree level at grade 2:1 or higher
- Registration as a Clinical Scientist
- Registration in another health profession (except voluntary registers)
- Registration in another health profession (including voluntary registers)
Professional training
Desirable
- Training in medical device technology, and clinical applications, and physiological measurement techniques
