St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Paediatric School Senior Fellow (ST4+)

The closing date is 17 June 2025

Job summary

The London School of Paediatrics (LSP) is looking to appoint a fellow for a period of one year. The purpose is to work with the School on projects to enhance recruitment and retention of trainees in paediatrics in London. 50% is allocated for this part of the role with the remaining 50% working in Acute General Paediatrics.

Recruitment in Paediatrics remains difficult with competition ratios around 2.0 making efforts to retain trainees within paediatrics particularly important. Training can be challenging for many reasons, and burnout is particularly high in paediatrics. Our data highlights issues with flexibility, workplace factors and unawareness of available resources. 15-20% of trainees entering paediatric training at ST1 do not go on to CCT in paediatrics

Main duties of the job

This post provides a unique and exciting opportunity to gain postgraduate education and personal leadership development whilst working at a busy tertiary paediatric centre. St George's Children's Services recently received an "Outstanding" rating from the CQC and we strive to continue to provide this excellent service to all our patients and their families. The post would suit a ST4+ trainee.

The postholder will participate in the compliant ST4+ rota, covering the paediatric wards and ED. To preserve time for the London School of Paediatrics work, the postholders clinical work is predominantly out of hours. The clinical fellow will lead the Paediatric junior doctor team covering ED during evening and night shifts and some standard days. On night shifts and some evening shifts sessions the clinical fellow will also oversee the care of children admitted to wards under all paediatric medical specialties. There is a paediatric consultant resident on call until 22.00, who is then available for support via telephone. At the weekend the on-call consultant is resident 08.30-22.00 Saturday and Sunday.
