Cancer Services Team Leader

Job summary

The primary responsibility of the postholder will be to provide direct leadership and support to the MDT Co-ordinators & Cancer Trackers, organising and managing the members of staff, including providing support in the case of leave and ensuring that multi-disciplinary teams (MDMs) are run to a consistently high quality.

In addition, the post holder will support with the delivery of both National and Local targets, managing and co-ordinating the work of the MDT co-ordinators and trackers in terms of their contribution and provide management support for the Senior Managers, Lead Cancer Nurse and Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job

  1. Leadership: Act as an ambassador for Cancer Services and foster a motivating and respectful work environment.
  2. Staff Management: Line manage and develop a team, ensuring departmental goals are met and maintained.
  3. Training: Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs for staff, ensuring they are skilled and compliant with Trust policies.
  4. Data Management: Oversee data collection and performance monitoring to meet national cancer targets and prevent breaches.
  5. Service Improvement: Collaborate on policy development, peer reviews, and service improvement initiatives.
  6. Governance and Compliance: Implement effective systems for governance, risk management, and compliance with Trust policies and regulations.

1. MANAGEMENT

1.1. Leadership

1.1.1. To act as an ambassador for Cancer Services within the Trust and across the London Cancer Alliance

1.1.2. To create an environment in which staff are valued, respected and motivated to achieve team and individual objectives

1.1.3. To facilitate excellent communication and build effective and respectful working relationships within the team and with the clinical specialties

1.1.4. To be fully accessible to act as a contact for internal and external cancer target-related queries and complaints and implement a clear structure for escalation from your team to you

1.2. Staff Management and Development

1.2.1. To directly line manage a team of MDT Co-ordinators, MDT Trackers, Data Validators and other Cancer Team members as required, developing and supporting the team to ensure that departmental goals are achieved and maintained

1.2.2. To Deputise for the line manager, specialty/ data manager in their absence and as delegated by their line manager.

1.2.3. To encourage the development of any staff directly managed to their full potential through annual individual performance review and the establishment of personal development plans, reflecting the needs of the organisation and the individual

1.2.4. To promote good two-way communication by arranging regular one-to-one meetings with staff, ensuring regular objective setting and review and organising team-building sessions and away days

1.2.5. To manage sickness, disciplinary and performance issues in line with Trust HR policies

1.2.6. To ensure staff records are kept and maintained in conjunction with Trust policy

2. Training

2.1. In conjunction with relevant professionals, to develop a comprehensive, training programme for all staff within the remit to ensure they are adequately skilled to undertake their roles effectively

2.2. To produce best practice training guidelines and deliver internal training for all relevant Trust staff, including clinicians and managers, as appropriate

2.3. To ensure that all staff with the remit participate in both Trust and departmental induction programmes, including attendance at mandatory (MAST) training and to ensure appropriate records of attendance are kept

2.4. Through staff appraisals, team meetings and observations, recommend appropriate training and development options for staff

2.5. In conjunction with the Service Manager, to provide regular local refresher training and advice to the teams regarding tracking, utilising in-house electronic systems such as ICLIP and EPR, Infoflex, the Open Exeter national cancer database and individual national cancer auditing tools, and act as a ICLIP Champion User and any other system as appropriate.

2.6. To support with the induction and training of new team members

2.7. To be aware of and share with the team current and future NHS and Trust initiatives and developments

2.8. To maintain own professional development, attending internal and external training, workshops and conferences relevant to the role

3. DATA MANAGEMENT

3.1. Data Collection and cancer performance

3.1.1. To have an understanding of the national cancer waiting times targets and other submissions made by the Trust in line with local and national policies and agreements

3.1.2. To work with respective teams and to responsibility of delivering cancer Performance in line with national targets.

3.1.3. To provide support for the collection on data for national audits.

3.2. Breach Avoidance and cancer performance

3.2.1. To encourage the MDT Co-ordinators to identify, in advance of their occurrence, potential breaches and take appropriate action to prevent this where possible.

3.2.2. To ensure the MDT Co-ordinators provide timely and accurate advice to the cancer clinical services to ensure that operational changes are made in order to avert breaches of national cancer waiting times targets that may compromise the Trusts ability to achieve a high performance.

3.2.3. To attend weekly PTL meetings to ensure that potential breaches are identified and actioned.

3.3. Reporting

3.3.1. With the Support of the cancer management team, to monitor the performance of tumour sites against both the agreed waiting time targets for diagnosis and treatment of patients diagnosed with cancer and other local and national targets.

4. SERVICE IMPROVEMENT & MODERNISATION

4.1. To work with members of the Cancer Services Team to develop and implement local and Trust policies in relation to cancer

4.2. To support the Peer Review process

4.3. To identify potential service developments and assist in writing business cases and service improvement plans

5. GOVERNANCE

5.1. To fully understand the principles guiding the Governance agenda for the Trust and translate these principles into action plans

5.2. To support and promote a culture in which individuals feel able to report incidents and that learning takes place from all incidents and complaints

5.3. To be responsible for implementing effective systems, control processes and risk management arrangements

5.4. To support conflict resolution from patients, staff, suppliers, other internal and external service providers and partner organisations relevant to Cancer Services

5.5. To participate as appropriate in the proper investigation of patient complaints or complaints from other users of the service, drafting of responses as necessary and taking identified corrective actions

5.6. To regularly assess risks to health, safety and security using the results to promote and improve practice
