Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellows in Trauma & Orthopaedics
Applications are invited for Junior Orthopaedic Research Fellows at St George's Hospital for 1 year starting August 2024
Main duties of the job
These posts are an excellent opportunity for candidates finishing foundation or core training and looking to perfect their portfolios before moving into higher surgical training, preferably in Orthopaedics.
The research fellow will have the opportunity to develop and lead on their own research projects as well as take over the running of existing studies and be involved in the recruitment of patients to national multicentre trials. This post will develop research skills and provide ample opportunities to present work at national and international meetings as well as generating publications. There will also be plenty of opportunities to augment the audit, service improvement and teaching aspects of their portfolios.
About us
St George's is a level 1 major trauma centre with a helipad facility. It is also a tertiary referral centre for complex elective orthopaedics, and currently has 24 orthopaedic consultants.

The clinical commitment of this post is to provide medical cover (at CT / SHO level) to major trauma patients and orthopaedic patients. This aspect is closely supervised and supported by the consultant of the weekwho undertakes daily ward rounds of all patients.
There is a 60 :40 split of clinical to research work. During their research time, the fellows will not have any ward or clinic commitments but will have the opportunity to gain surgical experience assisting in both elective and trauma cases. In addition, the daily educational trauma meetings will develop knowledge and skills in the management of polytrauma patients alongside simple and complex orthopaedic trauma.
The post is full-time, and includes working 1 in 7 weekends and 1 in 15 nights. There are no first on-call duties, and the post attracts a banding supplement.
