Job summary
Applications are invited for the position of Locum Registrar (6 months) in the Oral and Maxillofacial Department. They will be expected to play an active role in the provision and delivery of healthcare for patients who need treatment for a wide range conditions in the specialty including head & neck oncology, facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, salivary gland surgery, TMJ replacement surgery and reconstructive surgery for facial skin defects.
The department plays and active role in the established Major Trauma Centre at St George's Hospital and therefore a main emphasis of the post will be the provision of oral and maxillofacial trauma services both within and out of normal working hours.
Main duties of the job
This post would be suitable for any Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery trainee. A dual medical and dental qualification is desirable, whereby a medical qualification is essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to be skilled and confident enough to undertake on calls both in and out of hours.
The successful candidate will also be expected to cover clinical services across St George's Hospital.
About us
This is a busy unit that provides outpatient/inpatient Maxillofacial services together with all other hospital dental clinical specialities for the patients of South West London (eg Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics).
The Maxillofacial Unit has its own self contained Radiology suite (with a dedicated senior maxillofacial dental radiographer). The service incorporates a cephalostat, orthopantomogram, skull table, CBCT and intra oral facilities. All other X-ray facilities are available within the main X-ray department including CT, PETCT and MR imaging.
The Maxillofacial laboratory is housed in a purpose built block attached to the Maxillofacial Unit. As of 2018 the lab has in-house medical grade 3D printers, scanners and Materialise virtual surgical planning software.
The Maxillofacial department provides the full remit of maxillofacial/head and neck surgery including complex reconstructive, craniofacial trauma, paediatric, TMJ replacement and joint skull base surgery. The unit also has national funding for patient specific implants and virtual surgical planning.
