Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist with highly specialist skills in managing adults with acquired disorders of swallowing and communication secondary to Head and Neck Cancer and the treatment . You will be based at St Georges Hospital, Tooting, working within a team of specialist SLTs in the acute service including SLT let clinics, MDT Clinics and will have direct link to our MDT Outreach Head and Neck Cancer team.

You will offer a highly specialist service in collaboration with and support from the Clinical Lead SLT. You will have significant postgraduate specialist experience of managing patients with complex swallowing and communication disorders associated with a diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer and you will also have a demonstrable experience of working autonomously as specialist SLT within a multidisciplinary team. You will be able to demonstrate skill and competence in independently managing patients with a tracheostomy, laryngectomy and surgical voice restoration.

You will have a high level of competence in instrumental assessment and ss part of this role you will be required to provide supervision to developing SLTs. Our service make a strong commitment to providing excellent supervision and peer support, with a strong emphasis on team learning and development. We meet regularly as a specialist team as well as with the wider SLT team and provide and support opportunities for CPD.

To autonomously take responsibility for delivering a highly Specialist service to adult inpatients and outpatients referred mainly from the ENT, Oro-Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Oncology departments with communication and/or swallowing disorders. This includes patients undergoing surgical voice restoration, and other major Head and Neck surgery.

To contribute to the development of expert ENT/Head and Neck Speech and Language Therapy services in collaboration with the Clinical Lead SLT (Head and Neck) and Professional Head of SLT,

In collaboration with the Clinical Lead SLT to take responsibility for planning and delivering training to the wider MDT.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Masters Degree level or equivalent e.g. successful completion of short courses such as Advanced Dysphagia, Tracheostomy Management, Clinical Voice Disorders, Counselling and structured self study

Desirable

  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist

Experience

Essential

  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
  • 4 years post qualification experience working with adult client group >2 within Head and Neck
  • Experience in Surgical Voice Restoration
  • Assessment, treatment and management of complex clients with voice, speech, language and communication difficulties
  • Training and experience in counselling clients
  • Working with clients with complex dysphagia
  • Developing and delivering education and training packages.
  • Experience of being involved in Clinical audit
