Due to reorganisation within the respiratory physiotherapy service, we are delighted to advertise the position of 'Highly Specialised Paediatric Physiotherapist in Complex Respiratory Care.' based at St George's Hospital, London. Part time hours will be considered.
The postholder will join a growing team of Paediatric Respiratory and Acute Paediatric Physiotherapists. They will work primarily within respiratory outpatients alongside the paediatric respiratory physiotherapy team which comprises of B8a physiotherapists for both Long Term Ventilation (LTV) and Breathing Pattern Disorders & Asthma, in addition to working alongside Band 7 respiratory physiotherapy colleagues in LTV and Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU). The postholder will be responsible for the management of the complex respiratory outpatient caseload which includes:
- Chest Clearance Clinic: This is a weekly clinic led by the Physiotherapist and Respiratory Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
- General Respiratory Clinic: This is a weekly clinic which is Consultant led.
- Bronchiectasis: This is a consultant led MDT clinic that runs on alternate months.
- Joint Neurodisability/Respiratory clinic: This is a consultant led (Respiratory Consultant and Neurodisability Consultant) clinic that runs on alternate months.
- Joint Ataxia Telangiectasia Clinic: This is a consultant led (Respiratory Consultant and Immunology Consultant) clinic that runs on alternate months.
Main duties of the job
In addition to the outpatient caseload, there will be some inpatient responsibilities to support the management of the LTV caseload alongside LTV and PICU colleagues, in addition to overseeing the management of the children known to the outpatient respiratory caseload when they are admitted. As the numbers admitted to SGH from these cohorts are generally low, the inpatient work makes up a smaller portion of the role.
The post holder will be expected to have a high level of clinical skill and be able to work in the following clinical areas:
- Respiratory Outpatients
- Respiratory Physiotherapy Clinics
- Paediatric Wards (for patients known to the respiratory outpatient service)
- PICU (for patients known to the respiratory outpatient service)
- Neonatal Unit (infants with confirmed or suspected cystic fibrosis or primary ciliary dyskinesia)
St George's Hospital is a tertiary centre for respiratory. This is an exciting and varied caseload and will consequently require you to have sound knowledge and experience in respiratory assessment and management. The postholder will work closely with medical, nursing and other colleagues to provide a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) approach. The post holder will participate in team meetings and training both within the department and for our colleagues internally and externally. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with strong paediatric respiratory skills and experience in caseload management.

To provide leadership to and work as part of the physiotherapy team within the paediatric service based at St Georges Hospital (SGH) providing a high standard of physiotherapy assessment, treatment, and advice to a varied caseload of respiratory patients within the outpatient and inpatient setting.
To lead the paediatric respiratory physiotherapy service for children with general respiratory conditions, complex disability, and bronchiectasis.
To oversee the inpatient caseload and respiratory management of respiratory patients that are known to the outpatient respiratory service at SGH.

To have advanced skills in assessment, treatment and management of acute and chronic respiratory paediatric patients.
To formulate care plans and provide treatment interventions for children with acute and long-term respiratory problems.
To support and cross-cover other specialist respiratory clinics.
To participate in respiratory MDT ward rounds.
To participate in the weekly respiratory MDT meetings.
To be able to provide expert advice in airway clearance techniques and interventions, including the use of mechanical in-exsufflation.
To develop and maintain excellent relationships with the paediatric respiratory consultant team to ensure high standards of care and timely intervention for children with respiratory conditions.
To be responsible for the supervision and teaching of physiotherapists / physiotherapy assistants / students, MDT staff and parents / carers in physiotherapeutic care of paediatric patients with respiratory problems.
To work alongside the Band 8a Principal Paediatric Physiotherapist and Band 7 Paediatric Respiratory Physiotherapists to provide skilled team leadership and be responsible for operational management, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in respiratory paediatrics, and to set and monitor standards of practice.
To supervise, initiate and participate in evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice and to lead in departmental research and audit in their clinical area.
To work with senior colleagues in developing and establishing new paediatric services within the Trust.
To support and participate in a 7-day acute paediatric physiotherapy service. Whilst we do not currently run an out of hours on-call service, this is something that may be expected in the future.
To work with senior colleagues to participate in the development of the acute physiotherapy service at St Georges Hospital
