Job summary

  • To provide specialist respiratory assessment, diagnosis, treatment and care to a range of patients with undiagnosed respiratory disease as well as acute on chronic respiratory diseasepresentations.
  • The post requires working with a number of partners in and out of hospital settings, including Respiratory consultants, Respiratory nurses, GPs, community MDT teams and other partners such as Oxygen providers.
  • The Respiratory Department offers a full range of general and specialist outpatient's clinics both on site at St George's NHS Trust, Tooting and at sister sites including Queen Mary Hospital, Roehampton, The Nelson Centre, Wimbledon and St John's therapy Centre, Battersea.

  • The respiratory department also supports in-patient management of largely unplanned patient presentations, including the emergency department, acute medicine and the respiratory ward.

  • The emphasis is very much on accurate diagnosis, planning and stabling care for patients with both acute and chronic respiratory diseases, utilising a multidisciplinary approach.
  • St George's Hospital is a tertiary centre for Respiratory with a dynamic and growing Respiratory MDT. Our acute physiotherapy department has seen come exciting developments over the past 2 years with additional funding backing new posts and service development.

Main duties of the job

  • To use advanced assessment, diagnosis and plan treatment for respiratory patients in predominately outpatient settings, who are expected to have highly complex presentations in both acute and chronic disease.
  • The post hold will be required to determine clinical diagnosis and plan treatment indicated, working as an autonomous practitioner whilst ensuring the accurate records are maintained.
  • To take a role in supervision and teaching of students, and members of the wider MDT.
  • To provide skilled team leadership and be responsible for operational management, team development, implementation of policy and policy changes in own clinical area and to set and monitor standards of practice.
  • To input into commissioning of new services as required.
  • To supervise, initiate and participate in evidence based projects, including recommendations.for change in practice and to lead in departmental audit in the clinical area.
  • To report into national audits relevant to clinical area.
  • To report regularly to stakeholders on service KPI.
