Job summary

The Macmillan Information and Support Service is a core part of the Trust's Cancer Services Directorate and provides a strategic approach to the delivery of cancer information within St George's Hospital. Cancer information is disseminated through a variety of different routes and the service streamlines cancer information delivery so that a consistent accurate, evidence-based approach is adopted. This is informed and supported by the implementation of information pathways. The Macmillan Cancer Information Assistant will be based in the Macmillan Information and Support Centre in Saint Georges Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital .The post will provide support to the Macmillan Information and Support Manager in the delivery of the service. The service will be operational five days a week, Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job

  • Explore sensitively the information and support needs of service users and help them to identify the most appropriate information materials for their needs.
  • Provide individualised information and support to clients verbally, written or by phone, in a format that is appropriate to their needs.
  • Support the Macmillan Information and Support Manager with the supervision of the volunteers in the Macmillan Information and Support Centre and other cancer areas such as outpatient clinics by helping with training of volunteers, monitoring absence, attendance, and performance. Also by raising any concerns with the Macmillan Information and Support Manager on any volunteer issues.
  • Ensure the environment is conducive to confidential and supportive information giving.
  • To review in conjunction with the Macmillan Information and Support Manager, internally and externally produced information materials.
  • Participate in the audit and evaluation of all aspects of the service in order to provide a high quality, responsive service.
  • To produce in conjunction with the Macmillan Information and Support Manager, information leaflets, posters, and promotional material, relevant to the service.
  • Undertake the day to day running of the Macmillan Information and support Centre.
