DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSURGERY

Junior Clinical Fellow (ST1-2 equivalent) in Neurosurgery

JOB REFERENCE:

We will have a vacancy in neurosurgery, fixed term for 6-12 months in the first instance with a possibility of extending the contract.

The junior clinical fellow post will provide excellent experience for candidates from F2 to ST2 grade in all specialties. There is outstanding daily consultant neurosurgeon led morning teaching.

This post would be suitable for candidates contemplating neurosurgical training or entering other specialties in which some neurosurgical experience is advisable.

Main duties of the job

  • to work on the ward and carry out responsibilities as detailed by the Senior Teams
  • manage the day to day care of neurosurgery patients on the ward including the assessment of all new admissions to the ward and, where necessary, in A & E
  • support the management of neurosurgery patients on the critical care units

About us

The Atkinson Morley Neuroscience Centre provides tertiary neuroscience care to a regional population of 3.5 million in South West London, Surrey and Sussex and some district neurology services to the local population. The clinical services are housed in the purpose built Atkinson Morley Wing of St George's Hospital, opened in 2003 to accommodate the relocation of neurosciences from Atkinson Morley's Hospital in Wimbledon.

The Neurology service includes a Regional Head Injury Service and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit providing specialist stroke services to the population of South West London.

Consultant staff includes over 30 neurologists/neurophysiologists/stroke physicians including visiting consultants from other providers, 12 neurosurgeons, 11 neuroradiologists and 3 consultant paediatric neurologists. There are close clinical and academic links with neuroanaesthetics, neuropathology and pain management

There are 3-4 neurosurgical operating theatres.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • attend daily neurosurgical team teaching
  • teach medical students and other staff on the unit
  • when on duty the SHO will have a neurosurgical registrar available at all times and a consultant is available on-call from home
  • all SHOs are encouraged to attend theatres when consultants on their firms are in theatre, provided the wards are covered, and to learn how to do a burr hole and to raise a craniotomy flap. There is a dedicated theatre/clinic week in the timetable to support this
  • St. Georges Hospital is a designated University of London Teaching Hospital that has responsibility for teaching both nurses and undergraduate medical students attached to the wards. There is a daily meeting of the neurosurgical team as well as weekly multidisciplinary meetings in spine, oncology, movement disorders, paediatrics and vascular neurosurgery and a fortnightly skull base MDT
  • SHOs are encouraged to take part in the many ongoing clinical research and audit projects. There are no direct administrative duties, all the duties outlined take place in the Atkinson Morley Wing of St. Georges Hospital. It is always accepted that occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances may occur, which may involve the SHO in additional duties
  • at times, cover paediatric patients under the care of the neurosurgical team on the paediatric ward
