Clinical Fellow in Medical Oncology in Breast Cancer

Full Time: March 2024, 12 month contract

Applications are invited for a one year appointment as a Clinical Fellow in Medical Oncology in St George's Hospital. The post holder will help to provide Medical Oncology services at St. George's Hospital, trained, supported, and supervised by Consultants in Medical Oncology. This will include assessment and management of inpatients with diverse solid malignancies and lymphoma, including managing acute oncological emergencies and treatment of anti-cancer therapy related toxicity. The successful candidate will attend and contribute to affiliated multi-disciplinary meetings and Consultant ward rounds and will assess and manage patients on the Oncology day unit. The successful applicant will also work alongside the tumour specific oncology consultants in the outpatient clinic setting seeing patients independently on allocated patient list under consultant supervision, reviewing newly referred oncology patients, patients on treatment and patients on surveillance. In addition the post-holder will take part in a medical oncology SPR weekend on call rota, including day time attendance on site at weekends. Uniquely, there is no weekday on call rota and no overnight on call commitment or off-site clinical session.

Main duties of the job

Each tumour type is served by a comprehensive team working within the oncology department to provide complete multi-disciplinary management in the creation of individual care pathways and treatment for each patient. Inpatient beds are provided on Trevor Howell Ward and Gordon Smith wards. The wards are staffed by nurses with a specialist interest in oncology. Chemotherapy is given by trained Oncology Nurses who liaise and work with the Oncology Nurses in the Outpatient Clinic. The department has a designated Outpatient Area shared with Haemato-Oncology.

About us

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic team of up to four deanery medical oncology specialist trainees, as well as one internal medicine trainee (IMT) and up to 2 other trust grade senior house officers. The post is an ideal training opportunity to improve skills and knowledge in general and acute medicine, and better understand the natural history of cancer, to learn more about the benefits and risks of cancer treatment and to expand one's communication skills and team working.
