St Georges University Hospitals NHS Trust Maxillofacial Laboratory has a secondment vacancy for a skilled and experienced Maxillofacial Prosthetist/Reconstructive Scientist. Applicants must be in possession of approved qualifications.
The Maxillofacial Laboratory at St George's Hospital provides a wide range of medical devices and appliances to patients referred for rehabilitation by using prosthesis, implants, splints, and other custom-made medical devices, including 3D technologies.
St George's Hospital is five minutes walk from the Northern Line making access to central London a short journey. The successful applicant is expected to already possess a range of skills and experience in facial and body prostheses and to have had some experience in the following areas:
- Orthognathic planning & appliances
- Trauma splints and appliances
- Conventional facial prosthetics
- Custom made silicone implants
- 3D design software's, printers, and technologies
- Cranioplasty implants
- Intra-oral implant prosthetics
- Implants retained facial prosthetics
- Clinical & technical knowledge of obturation
Consideration will be given to applicants who have proven experience in Dental Technology who have gained experience in some of the above services .
Main duties of the job
Provide a full & professional Maxillofacial Prosthetic Service, including clinical assessment, impression taking, construction and fitting of oro-facial prostheses, maxillofacial prosthetics associated with osseointegrated implantology and oro-facial osseointegrated implantology and maxillary obturation. This will include patient assessment, impression taking, clinical and laboratory design, construction and fitting of prostheses. In addition, to take account of aesthetics, function, material science and biocompatibility of all components, materials and associated physiological, medical and related needs of the patient.

- Will be required to attend operating theatres in order that the team approach is applied when placing implants or when other related surgery is being performed, e.g. hemi-maxillectomy surgery, extra-oral implant placement.
- Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and self whilst complying with all current health and safety standards.
- Provide a clinical and technological support service to other sites as required.
- To liaise with Maxillofacial, Orthodontic and Restorative colleagues as required and to work together to ensure cover for leave purposes.
- Responsible for laboratory and clinical quality standards participating in clinical audit when required.
- Play a role in maintaining and developing in-house training programmes for Technologists and supervise students/technicians and clinicians seconded to the department for training in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Technology.
- Provide lectures to clinicians and technologists when required.
- Be involved in the technical and clinical management of patients undergoing treatment.
- To manage patients referred to the service and design and construct prosthetic therapy as required.
- To liase with colleagues over the provision of cranial implants for referred patients. To design and construct cranial implants and attend theatre to aid in placement as required.
- Develop research of prosthetic materials as they relate to Maxillofacial and other branches of reconstructive surgery and prosthetics.
