Maternity Support Worker (Glucose Tolerance Test Service)

Job summary

Main duties of the job

  • To work within the glucose tolerance test service on a day-to-day basis, strictly following the GTT protocol
  • Deliver clinical tasks and care to patients as required within set protocols and within the scope of the MSW remit
  • Following assessment by a midwife, undertake clinical tasks to a high standard
  • Maintain clear communication with both patients and other staff members
  • Maintain clear concise and legible documentation in accordance with Trust policies
  • Undertake verification of consent in accordance with Trust policies
  • To welcome service users and their families in a courteous and professional manner
  • To work in conjunction with the Specialist Midwife to co-ordinate the referral process
  • To assist in the delivery of health promotion advice as appropriate to the role and within their competency
  • Undertake agreed enhanced tasks as specified under the indirect supervision of the midwife
  • To support audits in the clinical area as directed by a midwifery manager where appropriate
  • To provide support to newly appointed Band 2-3 staff in their induction and orientation to the department as planned and requested by the Practice Support Team
  • Be familiar with the electronic patient data systems integral to the running of the GTT service

Job responsibilities

Maternal Medicine

  • To undertake the administration and organisation of referrals for glucose tolerance testing, understanding the various risk factors for gestational diabetes
  • To run the glucose tolerance test clinics including providing phlebotomy services, ensuring the correct process is followed
  • To follow up on non-attendees, ensuring that safeguarding processes are followed
  • To ensure patients with a normal glucose tolerance test result are informed in a timely manner and that abnormal results are notified to the diabetes midwifery team promptly
  • To order stock/ supplies to support the smooth running of the glucose tolerance test service
  • To teach patients, under the supervision of a midwife, the correct technique and procedure for home blood glucose monitoring and to provide safety netting advice.

Maintenance of the environment

  • Ensure rooms and surrounding bed areas are cleaned and maintained properly as per Infection Control guidelines
  • Ensure rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies and equipment
  • Ensure linen is stored, transferred, and disposed of in accordance with Trust policy
  • Support the wider team in ensuring the tidiness of clinical areas
  • Manage blood and bodily fluid spillages according to the Infection Control policy
  • Assist in the ordering, checking, unpacking, and storing of items delivered to the clinical area and follow up ordering as appropriate
  • Liaise with the clinical team to ensure that maintenance problems are reported to the Estates team promptly
