Job summary
The Neonatal assistant will support the Nursing workforce to provide safe effective care within the neonatal unit; ensuring evidence based care for patients under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The neonatal assistant will aid in providing stock of supplies to ICU, HDU and SC nurseries, collection of medications and blood products, cleaning of equipment and aiding in transfers to and from the neonatal unit. To utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively: with the neonate's family/carers, the multidisciplinary team, other departments within the Trust and pertinent agencies outside the organisation.The Healthcare Assistant may be expected to participate in audits and service improvement initiatives. The Nursing Associate will be expected to supervise and support HCAs, Trainee Nursing Associates and Pre-registration nurses.
Main duties of the job
St George's Neonatal Unit is a perinatal medical and surgical referral centre, covering the South West London sector and beyond. The unit has a capacity of 40 cots, 12 of which are intensive care, 12 high dependency and 16 special care. We have a large medical and nursing establishment of 187 with a range of nursing positions from Neonatal Assistants to Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners.
The working hours will be shift work, including earlies, lates and weekends. The shift pattern and working hours will be discussed during induction so as to ensure cover for the shifts required. This post available on the unit, is a fixed term full time position of 37.5 hours/week with the opportunity to do bank shifts following the first 3 months of employment. These hours are subject to change should the role develop further.
