Job summary

An exciting opportunity exists for a full time HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion section at Epsom & St Helier Hospitals.

This post is jointly based atEpsom and St HelierHospital Haematology &Blood Transfusion Laboratories however the post holder may be required to work at any of the South West London Pathology sites as and when necessary.

Main duties of the job

This Specialist Biomedical Scientist role requires a motivated HCPC registered BMS to work in a busy acute laboratory. The candidate must have advanced scientific expertise across Haematology and transfusion to provide specialist training, scientific and technical analysis and skills in troubleshooting, problem solving and supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the 24hr shift system after suitable training and competence assessments.

South West London Pathology is an award winning pathology partnership between four leading Hospital Trusts - St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals NHS Trust and Croydon Health Services NHS Trust - designed to provide an integrated, high quality pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London, by bringing together the best of each Trust's service and providing them within a single organisation.

The Epsom and St Helier Hospital Clinical Blood Sciences Laboratory, of which Haematology and Blood Transfusion are a part, operates a 24hr shift system providing cover to a busy Emergency Department and acute services. The Laboratory is currently equipped with IH-500 Blood Group analysers, Sysmex XN full blood count and coagulation CS analysers and Sebia Flex and Neonat capillary haemoglobinopathy analysers with the main IT platform for both sites currently being Telepath.

Job responsibilities

To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:

  • To contribute to providing a professional and technical laboratory service working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.
  • To undertake routine maintenance of analysers and equipment, ensuring that Calibration, IQC and EQC are within acceptable limits. This forms part of the duties of completing all documentation required by CPA/UKAS and MHRA.
  • To communicate any issue that may affect provision of the service to the Senior Biomedical Scientist.
  • To perform blood group and antibody screening and other routine tests within the Blood Transfusion laboratory, and to perform further secondary testing including Antibody Panel investigations and identification as necessary.
  • To be aware of all local and national guidelines and policies related to the provision of safe blood products to patients.
  • To provide compatible blood components for routine and emergency transfusion.
  • To analyse and interpret full blood counts and haemostasis results adding further investigations where required.
  • To perform manual tests such as malaria and glandular fever screening.
  • To analyse and interpret haemoglobinopathy results for both neonatal and antenatal patients.
  • To review and comment on blood films.
  • To receive and communicate information accurately and concisely to colleagues and service users as required.
  • To assist in the development and implementation current and new techniques within the laboratory.
  • To assist in the validation of new equipment.
