Job summary

The role of TB Clinical Nurse Specialist is to provide high quality care to all patients (adults and children) with Tuberculosis. You will work as part of a multi-professional team to ensure that patients with TB receive excellent care from initial investigations to treatment completion. You will manage a caseload of patients providing clinical and social support to adults and children affected by TB. The role is integral to the prevention, detection and control of TB in Southwest London.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job are to provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals by identifying and initiating appropriate evidence based care. This includes; managing a caseload of patients with active and latent TB, completing diagnostic tests e.g. mantoux, induced sputum and phlebotomy, running nurse led clinics and community visits. You will contribute to service development through audit and participate in TB education and awareness raising activities for healthcare professionals in the hospital and community and to other professionals who may be involved in caring for people with TB.

About us

The TB service at St Georges Hospital provides specialist inpatient and outpatient services and care for the clinical diagnosis and management of TB patients. We are the tertiary referral centre for multi-drug resistant TB and provide specialist care for patients with TB meningitis and co-infection across South- West London.

The specialist nursing team consists of specialist nurses, an outreach worker and administrator and they deliver a number of services for TB patients; nurse led clinics for patients receiving treatment for active and latent TB, screening clinics for contacts of TB (adult and paediatric), occupational health contacts, new entrant screening clinics and screening for patients prior to receiving biologic treatments. We have a rapid access clinic for patients with symptoms of active TB who are referred from the community or other tertiary services. We work with inpatient teams to support the care of inpatients on TB treatment. We are the local TB team for HMP Wandsworth to whom we provide specialist advice.
