Consultant in Neurology with special interest in Neuromuscular disorders and Acute Neurology (6 PAs)
This is an exciting opportunity for a clinically qualified individual to work within the growing and dynamic neurology department at St George's Hospital.
St George's has a dedicated Neuromuscular Service managing secondary and tertiary care Neuromuscular referrals from South West London and Surrey. The Neuromuscular service has expanded rapidly over the past two years, with sub-specialty services including delivering gene therapy in spinal muscular atrophy, muscle and channelopathies, motor neuron disease clinics and myasthenia gravis. The post-holder will join four Consultants with a specialist interest in Neuromuscular conditions, a clinical genetics CNS, a specialist neuromuscular physiotherapist and two neuromuscular care advisors.
Main duties of the job
- Leading on the delivery of gene therapies for patients with spinal muscular atrophy
- Working with the Neuromuscular team to deliver excellent care to our patients including carrying out a weekly motor nerve clinic at St George's, monthly motor nerve clinic in Surrey, contributing to the neuromuscular meetings and complex myasthenia MDT.
- Contributing to the clinical research programme in neuromuscular disorders including clinical trials in MND.
- The post holder will contribute to the Neurology ward Attending service on weekdays on a rota basis.
- The post holder will be on call for the regional neurology service and will conduct a weekend ward round on the Regional Neurology Unit on Saturday and Sunday. Ordinarily this will be one or two weeks a year
- Contributing to education of undergraduates and postgraduates including clinical supervision of trainees in neurology.
Mentoring is very important in neurology and the post holder will be provided with a senior mentor to support their progress.
About us
The Atkinson Morley Regional Neuroscience Centre provides tertiary neuroscience care to a regional population of 3.5 million in South West London, Surrey and Sussex and district neurology services to the local population (around 1 million). The directorate comprises the departments of neurology, stroke, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation, neurophysiology, neuropsychology and chronic pain. There are close clinical and academic links with neuro-anaesthetics, neuro-intensive care and neuropathology which are themselves based in other directorates.
The clinical services are housed in the purpose-built Atkinson Morley Wing of St George's Hospital, opened in 2003 to accommodate the relocation of neurosciences from the former Atkinson Morley's Hospital in Wimbledon.
The Neurology service includes a regional TBI service for South West London and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit providing specialist stroke services to the population of South West London. Consultant staff includes over 50 neurologists / neurophysiologists / stroke physicians including visiting consultants from other providers, 10 neurosurgeons, 8 neuroradiologists, 3 consultant paediatric neurologists and 3 consultants in rehabilitation medicine. There are 5 consultant neuropsychiatrists based with the directorate.
