This is an exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to join our friendly dynamic Dermatology Team at St. George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Our Dermatology nursing services are provided on three sites - Queen Mary's Roehampton, St George's Hospital Tooting, & The Nelson community Health Centre Wimbledon. This post will be based at St. George's Hospital Tooting site, but you may be asked to go to one of the other sites depending on service needs.
We provide a range of day care treatments, including phototherapy, photodynamic therapy, iontophoresis and topical treatments to patients with acute and chronic skin disease including skin cancer. This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to develop expertise within this specialty including assisting in clinic and minor surgery. You will be joining a small team of nurses and Doctors who aim to provide excellent care to all patients attending the unit and we aim to develop and support all our staff to achieve this. Experience within a dermatology and phototherapy setting is desirable; however; consideration will be given to a candidate who demonstrates a keen interest and proven track record of personal and professional development and are willing to undergo training to meet this role. You must however possess a flexible attitude, and commitment to this role.
The unit currently operates Monday - Friday **but subject to change based on service requirements
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have a remit to deliver phototherapy safely in line with departments protocols. In addition, they will be actively involved in delivering other nurse led therapies including day care treatments (where possible) & assisting with minor skin procedures. The post holder will be actively involved in our weekly Dermatology clinics and ensure patients ongoing pathways are organized efficiently.
About us
The Dermatology department consists of a variety of outpatient clinics providing diagnostic and therapeutic outpatient care to the local community. Integral to the patient care pathways are the Endoscopy and Minor Operations unit and Radiology.
The department consists of specialty clinics providing diagnostic and therapeutic outpatient care to the local community, including a phototherapy service and dermatology minor surgery which is based on 3 sites, SGH, QMH and The Nelson
The Dermatology Day care Unit at Clinic B, St. George's Hospital provides specialist care in Phototherapy, topical treatments, Ionotophoresis, photodynamic therapy, complex wounds and cryotherapy. The CNS & the Lead Nurse in Dermatology provides nurse led clinics on all three sites, therefore all nurses who work in our dermatology departments are given the opportunity to acquire new skills and develop their expertise within this specialty.

- To be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the implementation and evaluation of patient care for patients undergoing phototherapy and topical treatments within the department.
- To administer PUVA and UVB therapies safely in line with departments protocols and evidence-based practice.
- Provide Pre and Post treatment patient education and orientation for patients attending for phototherapy or day care.
- To recognize the responsibilities of the nurse in administering PUVA, UVB and topical treatments.
- To work as part of a team in a conducive and co-operative manner. To assist in all aspects of the smooth running of the dermatology department including allocation and preparation of clinics and dermatology minor operation sessions.
- To provide education and support for qualified and unqualified staff.
- To provide supervision to student nurses on placement within the unit.
- To participate and carry out education sessions to improve Dermatology skills outpatient staff when required.
- To fully achieve and maintain competencies within the Trusts Competency Framework for this grade and specialty.
- To be multi-skilled within the dermatology unit. If required will be able to work in clinics, phototherapy, minor op sessions, or day care.
- Attend appropriate meetings as advised by senior nurse including attendance at MDT meetings/departmental meetings.
- Actively participate in the health promotion and education of clients, carers and relatives where appropriate.
- Fully achieve and maintain competencies within the nursing competency framework for this band (according to KSF outlines/ specific profession examples of application).
