Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Health Care Assistant with an NVQ Level 2/3 in Health or in Health & Social Care or equivalent technician orscience qualification. Please note that this is an essential qualification for this post.The Junior Associate Practitioner will work alongside the Trust's VenousAccess Team providing support in both the clinical area and on the wards.Experience caring for a variety of hospital in-patients is essential along with experience of assisting with clinical procedures.

The Junior Associate Practitioner will liaise with clinical areas to ensure the timely and appropriate transfer of patients to and from the Venous Access department and assist with portering duties as required. The Junior Associate Practitioner will assist the Venous Access Team where appropriate in the procedure room, help to monitor standards of ongoing venous access device care on the wards and assist with audit and administrative duties as required.The successful applicant will have a minimum of 1 years' experienceworking as a Band 2 HCA in an acute hospital environment. Please notethat this is essential experience for this post.

Main duties of the job

The nurse led Venous Access service provides a comprehensive elective service to patients cared for by St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, including adult in-patients and outpatients.

The post holder will support the Venous Access Team in the delivery of Venous Access Services

Job responsibilities

Main Duties/Key Results Areas:

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Perform ultrasound venepuncture and cannulation initially under direction of Nurse Practitioner then independently once competency form is completed.
  • Help and support the Nurse Practitioners in day to day running of service including preparing and assisting of procedures
  • Acknowledge referrals received via iClip and email and reflect them on diary as appropriate or refer to the Nurse Practitioners
  • Liaise with multi-professional colleagues to ensure a timely and appropriate delivery of venous access services
  • Assist with the transfer of patients to and from the Venous Access procedure room and to and from the X ray department
  • Help to maintain equipment stock levels under the supervision of the nurse practitioner
  • Visit the ward areas to carry out data collection and surveillance
  • To provide advice on vascular access device care to ward staff and to feedback relevant information to the Central Venous Access Team
  • To transport clinical specimen as required as per Trust policy
  • To help porter the patients, when necessary to and from the Venous Access Procedure Room
  • To book porters as anticipated or requested by the Nurse Practitioner
  • To ensure that there are sufficient stock levels of consumables and inform practitioners if theres any ordering required

CARE MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain accurate, legible and complete records relating to patients care
  • Handle sensitive information whilst maintaining confidentiality
  • Contribute to the safe moving and handling of clients
  • Provide information and advise patients, relatives and carers re: venous access within the scope of the junior associate practitioner role (see principle responsibilities)
  • To keep track of patients in the hospital with venous access devices and ensure that the catheter care boxes are topped up

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

  • Identify the boundaries of the junior associate practitioner role and work within these limits
  • Identify personal learning requirements
  • Work as part of a team and be sensitive to others personal beliefs and preferences
  • Participate in yearly Performance and Development Reviews
  • To ensure that patient privacy and dignity are respected at all times
    • To ensure skills are up-to-date and relevant to the role, to follow relevant Trust policies and professional codes and to maintain registration where this is a requirement of the
    • Ensure cleanliness in the procedure room and office as per Trust policy and ensure safety check is done daily.

COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Adapt communication methods when working with people who may have communication difficulties
  • Develop relationships with people and value them as individuals
  • Transmit messages at an appropriate time and using methods consisting with their urgency
  • To work independently and as part of a team following guidelines, but knowing when to seek advice and guidance when required
