About us

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced stroke nurse to join a well-established stroke team with services providing the full pathway of stroke care from hyper-acute, stroke rehabilitation, TIA service, outpatients and community therapy provision. William Drummond Ward is the hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) has 20 beds for caring for hyper acute stroke patients, and located on the 3rd Floor of Atkinson Morley Wing in St George's Hospital, Tooting. The Hyperacute Stroke (HASU) is one of eight units in London thatspecialises in the assessment and treatment of stroke patients from across South West London and provides a 24/7 thrombolysis and thrombectomy service (in partnership with Kings College London).

Our nursing ward ratios are in accordance with London Stroke Standards whilst on HASU patients receive specialist care for acute stroke including; rapid access to emergency pathways such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy. The unit works closely with the Emergency Department for rapid patient assessments. We recognize that the best nurses require the best education and training. We are renowned for providing leading professional development and will offer teaching and education around specialist skills in acute stroke care. We support and encourage proactive nurses and nurse led activities. We aim to provide the individuals that join our team tailored individual development packages .

Main duties of the job

  1. Develop the ward/department philosophy and models of care to ensure that all policies and procedures are implemented and to lead on the development of nursing practice.

  2. Maintain personal contact with patients, relatives and carers being courteous and sensitive to their needs for privacy and dignity and act as an effective role model ensuring a friendly environment at all times.

  3. Ensuring that there are systems in place to store check and administer drugs in accordance with the Trust and NMC policies.

  1. To provide expert guidance and supervision aiding problem solving and clinical decision making. Ensuring that accurate and timely nursing records are maintained, monitoring standards and taking corrective action as appropriate.

  2. To continually review the setting of staffing levels/skill mix in accordance with the changing needs of the service and informing the Senior Nurse of any problems that may arise.

  1. To be proactive in the prevention and management of complaints and when they do occur to investigate and respond in accordance with the St George's Healthcare NHS Trust complaints and improvements policies.

  2. Communicating, influencing and working with the multidisciplinary team to promote excellent care and informed clinical decisions
