Job summary

A vacancy has arisen for an enthusiastic, skilled midwife to co-ordinate our Delivery Suite. We are looking for a motivated midwife with experience caring for high and low risk women, ample HDU and triage background, and ideally acting up as labour ward coordinator. St George's delivery suite hosts a designated HDU area, triage and two obstetric theatres to meet the varied needs of our population. All our staff are trained in STAN fetal monitoring, and this method is successfully used on the delivery suite since 2002.

Main duties of the job

As professional role model, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management and organisation of the clinical area, whilst providing support and leadership to the midwifery team and maintaining your own clinical skills. The successful applicant will possess excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to manage change, difficult situations, and think on your feet within a challenging environment. You will work closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, with a clear and consistent approach to problem solving, risk management and effective team building. You will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operation of the delivery suite, ensuring quality our quality standards are achieved, managing all grades of midwifery and support staff including student midwives when necessary. You will participate in the bleep holder responsibilities and liaise closely with the lead midwives in the maintenance and development of the service. You will be expected to participate in ongoing service improvement and safety initiatives.

St George's maternity unit provides care to over 5000 women each year. We take great pride in promoting midwifery by delivering holistic woman-centred care to our diverse local community. The enthusiastic midwifery and obstetric teams work together to meet the specific needs of women who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We strive to normalise the pregnancy and birth experience for women with both high and low risk pregnancies, excelling in the provision of high risk care for women who need it, while actively increasing our homebirth rate and the option of giving birth in the midwifery led unit. We have three consultants' midwives, leading on midwifery-led care, public health and maternal medicine.

  • Registered Midwife min 3 years post registration clinical experience
  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent with evidence of further professional development
  • Mentorship Qualification/ SSSA

Desirable

  • Clinical experience at a Band 7
  • Relevant specialist courses
  • Attended a clinical leadership program.
  • CTG study day

Management and Leadership/ Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of leadership roles and skills.
  • Management of sickness and absence
  • Roster experience
  • Safeguarding training and knowledge of procedures

Desirable

  • Attended IPR course and doing staff appraisals.
  • Evidence of implementing a change in practice
