Locum Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes - 6 MONTHS FIXED TERM Maternity cover with possibility of being extended as a part time role

Main duties of the job
Applications are invited for a dynamic, enthusiastic consultant paediatrician to join the Paediatric Endocrine and Diabetes teams at St George's Hospital. This is a 6 month fixed term, full-time (10PA) post
The postholder will share all duties involved in running this busy paediatric endocrine and diabetes service which receives tertiary, secondary and primary care referrals.
The successful applicant will work with the present team which includes 2 FT Paediatric Endocrinologists. The endocrine team is supported by 2 FT Paediatric Endocrine CNS, and the diabetes team by 3 WTE (2 FT & 2 PT) paediatric diabetes nurse specialists, 1 paediatric dietician, 1 paediatric diabetes psychologist and 1 designated diabetes coordinator. There is 1 WTE paediatric Endocrine junior doctor at ST6-8 level on the London SW Thames rotation.
St George's paediatric department is a highly rated teaching and training centre and there is opportunity to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Job responsibilities
Outpatient clinics
The postholder will undertake diabetes and endocrine outpatient clinics every week. These will include a mix of new referrals and follow-up patients. There will be a cross cover with Dr Rice as required to ensure capacity to offer 3 monthly appointments in the MDT paediatric diabetes clinic and other service needs as required by the Best Practice Tariff for paediatric diabetes.
Inpatient activity
The postholder will support together with Dr Rice, the management of children undergoing treatment or endocrine tests as day cases in Jungle Day Ward and will closely work with the 2 clinical nurse specialists. During the attending week, ward reviews are expected from the postholder for diabetes patients admitted acutely and occasionally electively for stabilisation of poor glycaemic control, as well as, referral of patients with endocrine and diabetes queries from PICU, NICU, general paediatrics and other specialties.
Out of hours work and on call
The postholder will work with the other members of the diabetes team to provide out-of-hours advice/support as required to meet the Best Practice Tariff on a 1:5 basis which accounts for 0.25 DCC. In addition, the postholder will also be required to participate in the non-resident out-of hours oncall rota for on a 1:2 basis for paediatric diabetes and 1:3 for paediatric endocrinology which will attract category B on-call payments.
Teaching and Training
The Trust is a major centre of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The post holder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff at St Georges. Teaching, examination and accreditation duties will be required. They will contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity. With particular relevance to this post, the postholder will also contribute to the monthly Paediatric Endocrine Specialty registrar Teaching and supervision of projects. They will be expected to take part in educational & clinical supervision of the paediatric registrar(s) allocated to the paediatric endocrinology and diabetes and mentoring those pursuing the RCPCH special study module in diabetes during their post in the department.
Continuing Medical Education, Research and Audit
The Centre of Research Facilities at St Georges University Hospital provides a supportive environment for the clinicians and it welcomes research trials in Paediatric and adolescent patients. The endocrinology & diabetes service is actively involved in clinical research and audit activity. Our department is involved in a number of national and international multi-centre studies including children with growth disorders, type 1 diabetes (including ADDRESS-2 and Trialnet) and Type 2 diabetes.
The post holder will be required to participate in medical audit and in continuing medical education. The appointee will also be able to enrich his/her research portfolio in the part of the week without clinical duties with clinical research that is related to service delivery. They will be encouraged to continue/develop any research interests of their own and would have access to all facilities provided by the medical school. The research should assist the development objectives of both the Clinical Unit and the Trust, which is linked with the St Georges University. In recognition of demonstrated teaching and research, the Medical School may offer an honorary Senior Lectureship to the successful candidate.
Management
The successful applicant will be expected to work with local managers and consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. The postholder will be expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of St. Georges Healthcare NHS Trust. Where the postholder is required to manage employees of St. Georges Healthcare NHS Trust, the postholder will be expected to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures. The postholder will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of their patients to be able to contact them when necessary.
