Job summary

This post is to mainly work within the Paediatric Neurology Service providing Ketogenic Diets to children with epilepsy and other disorders where the treatment is proven to be effective. You will to support a team of ketogenic dietitian and the Consultant Neurologists to provide this service.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for assisting the Ketogenic dietitians to provide an efficient service to children on the Ketogenic Diet.
  • To work with training, support and supervision from the paediatric dietitians within the specialist area of Ketogenic paediatric dietetics
  • You will work alongside 3 other dietetic assistants who work within our special feed unit. You will be required to do infrequent shifts within this unit to help support this service. This may include one Saturday morning shift a month and some bank holidays on a rota basis.
  • To carry out administrative tasks including preparation for clinics and other education/ health promotion programmes

Job responsibilities

  • Assist the supervising Dietitian in developing nutrition care plans and providing nutritional care or dietetics service to patients
  • Communicate nutrition care plans to patients/ and or carers
  • Identify individuals with nutritional needs using predetermined criteria eg: nutrition screening tool
  • Calculate nutrient and energy intake values and assist in evaluating information from food diaries
  • Deliver education to patients and carers concerning nutrition concepts and desired changes in eating habits
  • Assist in the developments and delivery education and training programmes
  • Assist with the follow up of patients, such by telephone review or appropriate clinic review.
  • To become proficient in the use of Ketogenic software to create recipes for patients according to prescriptions
  • To be help create and trial new recipes for the Ketogenic Diets
  • To help organise and run patient support groups
  • To become competent in the use of blood ketone monitors and train patients and carers in the use of them.
  • Arrange home enteral feeding discharges, under the supervision of the relevant Dietitian, including providing pump training and ordering supplies from the relevant nutrition company, and liaison with local community services.
  • Liaise with catering and patients to ensure the provision of special diets to appropriate patients
