This is a full time (37.5 hour) permanent vacancy that is night shifts only.

Main duties of the job

Hospital at Night (H@N) is a multi-professional, multispecialty approach to delivering care at night and out of hours, with the aim of improving patient safety. We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic nurse, who is committed to the delivery of safe patient care in the ward and other areas outside of Critical Care, to join us and be a part of our developing Multi-disciplinary team.

We welcome applicants who are highly motivated with an acute clinical background who can demonstrate expertise in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients and meet the person specification. This post requires motivation, flexibility and initiative, the ability to prioritise workload in challenging situations and excellent communication and team skills. The applicant should be able to demonstrate the use of evidence based practice and be proactive in managing change.

About us

We employ around 9,000 dedicated staff across more than 40 different services and specialties. Every day, more than 2,000 patients attend our sites, mainly for outpatient appointments, elective surgery, and in our Emergency Department, made famous as the home of '24 Hours in A&E'. We are are a regional centre for neurosciences, including stroke care, cardiothoracic surgery, including primary cardiac interventions, high risk maternity, oncology and Trauma. We have a 62 critical care beds at our Tooting site, including a neuroscience and cardiothoracic specialist units.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide clinical expertise and support care for acutely unwell adult patients.
  • Improve the patient experience and care standards across acute wards and critical care.
  • Co-ordinate/facilitate/provide educational support for registered and non-registered ward staff in caring for the acutely ill ward patient in line with recorder and first responder level as outlined in the DoH (2007) competencies in recognition and response to the acutely ill patient in hospital.
  • Participate in the National Critical Care Outreach Activity Outcome Dataset.
  • Actively contribute to Critical Care, Medical and Surgical Governance by attending departmental meetings, ensuring learning from cases and quality improvement, in relation to track & trigger and graded response system, included level of compliance.
  • Establish and maintain links with approved education institutions providing acutely ill adult courses such as Kingston University, Kings College University of London and similar providers.
  • Actively participate in national and corporate projects.
  • Demonstrate a commitment towards the development of professional and clinical practice (self and others) with a passion for the concept of critical care outreach.
