Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic consultant occupational physician to join our multidisciplinary occupational health team to participate in the on-going development and evolution of our occupational health services to the Trust and our external in Higher Education sector in our locality.

The occupational health services are in advanced discussion in collaborative working of several NHS occupational health services in Southwest London. The vision of the South West London Acute Provider Collaborative (SWLAPC) is: "To develop a clinically excellent well led occupational health service that consistently delivers high quality, cost effective services to all NHS staff working across SWL APC". It is an exciting opportunity for the appointed consultant to contribute to the shaping of innovative delivery of high-quality occupational health services to staff in healthcare and higher education sector. There will be opportunity for further expansion in intermediate future.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in providing clinical work and leadership as well as contribute in overall service development, training, audit, and quality assurance. The post holder will also help in the business development of the service.

Clinical Activities

The post holder will have a clinical caseload and will also support the OH nursing team and specialty trainee with their casework. The clinical work will include:

  • Pre-placement assessments
  • Assessments regarding fitness for work, fitness for study and rehabilitation following sickness absence as well as assessment for ill health retirement.
  • Management of risk from BBV 's and communicable diseases
  • Supporting the team members in the multidisciplinary team and the trainee doctors in occupational medicine by providing specialist advice
  • Health surveillance; in areas including skin, respiratory and radiation surveillance.
  • Providing advice on assessment and management of health risks in the workplace
  • Providing advice on assessment and management of environmental risks
  • Policy writing, attending committee meetings of Trusts and Universities, clinical governance activities - shared with other members of the team

About us

The Department of Occupational Health is a long-established service within St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust providing occupational health services to over 9,000 Trust staff. In addition to being service provider to the Trust, the department provides occupational health services to 6300 staff and students of St George's, University of London and 3000 healthcare students at Kingston University. The main service is currently based over two premises within the St George's Hospital site in Tooting. The department's multi-disciplinary team currently includes a consultant (in addition to the advertised post) who is the Head of the Department, Head of Nursing & and Business manager, Head of Counselling and a team of counsellors, senior moving and handling advisors, one Specialty Registrar, Occupational Health nurse advisors and an occupational Health physiotherapist.

The department works very closely with the Wellness lead, Human Resources Department, Health and safety department, Virologists, Medical Microbiologists and control of infection team. St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Occupational Health Department is fully accredited to the standards for Safe Effective Quality Occupational Health Services (SEQOHS).

  • MFOM
  • Full Registration with GMC and Name on Specialist Register for Occupational Medicine on date of taking up appointment (or within 6 months of entry if a UK trainee)
