Job summary
The Diabetic Specialist midwife will manage and coordinate midwifery care for women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes within Croydon.
They will review maternity care for those service users in conjunction
with the Obstetric Consultants, Consultants in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Diabetic SpecialistNurses, Dieticians and wider multidisciplinary teams (MDT). Working collaboratively, the postholder will benchmark current services against the requirements of Saving Babies Lives Version3, NICE and NHSR Maternity Incentive Scheme, identifying the changes required and takingprompt action to implement these changes to enable compliance
Main duties of the job
- To undertake assessments, provide support, education and advice for women with pre-existing or gestational diabetes and their families to supplement the care provided by their midwives where necessary, and making referrals to additional specialist support where required.
- Attend the antenatal ward andprovide specialist support and advice for both women and healthcare professionals on diabetes management in labour and arrange postnatal follow-up care.
- Undertake full role of a midwife including advanced decision making, using evidenced based practice and highly developed advanced practice skills to contribute to the MDT to ensure delivery of optimum care.
- In partnership with the Lead Consultant Obstetrician, facilitate and have responsibility for the assessment, implementation and evaluation of services for women with pregnancies complicated by diabetes, leading on midwifery aspects. Including ensuring all policy and protocol are up to date and adhered to.
- Ensure appropriate individualized care plans, incorporating antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal elements, are established.
- Provide direct midwifery care for women throughout their episode of care, coordinating their overall care plan where appropriate.
- Line manage and support the Diabetes team providing safe, compassionate, evidence based care.
- Act as a resource for all staff involved in maternity care
- Develop and coordinate training programmes for staff, and participate in the induction of new staff
