Locum Consultant Paediatrician

Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). This is a Less Than Full Time (LTFT) consisting of 6 Programmed Activities (PAs) to commence March 2026 for a fixed term of 12 months to cover maternity leave.

We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic colleague to join our Paediatric Department. The post will be based primarily in the paediatric ED department and paediatric outpatients. The post holder will job share with a colleague to cover the paediatric emergency department (PED) on a 1:5 week rotating basis which includes a rapid access clinic and telephone advice service for local GPs. Outpatient clinics will be part of the timetable during non-PED attending weeks. There is opportunity to continue to develop expertise in an area of paediatric sub-speciality interest if this fits within the departmental or regional need.

Main duties of the job

Acute Paediatrics

A completely new Paediatric Integrated Unit (PIU) opened in May 2022. The paediatric ward, Rainbow Children's Unit, incorporates a 4 bedded HDU, 2 paediatric oncology beds, 2 adolescent beds and a further 9 standard inpatient beds to the latest modern standards. The PIU includes an additional 10 bedded paediatric day unit and a 7 bedded paediatric short stay unit.

The Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) area within CUH emergency department caters for approximately one third (approx. 25,000 children annually) of all attendances and due to the diverse population in the Croydon area we see a wide variety of acute pathology. A completely new Emergency Department (including PED) opened in December 2018. The new PED has state of the art facilities including two high specification paediatric resus cubicles and a paediatric HDU cubicle.

Paediatric out-patients is based in The Willows outpatient department, newly re-opened in Dec 2023, where both general Paediatric, Neonatal and sub-specialty Paediatric clinics are held.

This is a less than full time locum maternity cover post to ensure the acute Paediatric department at Croydon University Hospital continues to deliver excellent high quality, patient centred, and responsive care. We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic colleague to join our Paediatric Department.

Engagement with key professionals is critical, including ED staff, community staff and subspecialty colleagues. The post holder will form part of a dynamic team of thirteen paediatric consultants providing care across a wide range of specialties. S/he will be expected to have experience in a wide range of General Paediatric and Neonatal conditions, from acute management to long term follow up where appropriate.

Neonatal cover (Level 2) cover for out of hours on call is also part of this post.

The post is built around a 6PA job plan (more detailed breakdown at end). This post is a job share with another colleague to cover the attending in the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) 1 in 5 weeks. This breaks down into covering 1 in 10 Wednesdays and 1 in 5 Thursdays and Fridays between 0830hrs and 1700hrs. The other four weeks include outpatient clinics, administrative sessions, and SPA time. Annual leave will be covered internally. The on-call rota will be based on a 13 FTE consultant rota, of which this post covers 0.5 FTE. When on call, the post holder is expected to cross cover General Paediatrics, Neonatology (Level 2 unit) and Paediatric emergencies within the paediatric emergency department (PED). When on call, the post holder is expected to be on site until 22:00 hrs to ensure compliance with HLP London Quality standards of consultant presence during hours of peak activity.

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent MRCPCH
  • Inclusion in the specialist register for Paediatrics or equivalent, or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview. Name on Specialist Register on date of taking appointment.
  • Full registration with the GMC

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
  • Subspecialty certificate of completion in neonatology or SPIN module in neonatology

Experience

Essential

  • Broad Neonatal and General Paediatric experience and understanding of Clinical Governance
