Croydon Health Services Trust provides a broad range of elective and emergency services to a population of almost 400,000 across the borough of Croydon. Services are delivered across two sites- Croydon University Hospital (CUH) site is a 450-bed acute hospital and Purley War Memorial Hospital offers outpatient services. The General Surgery department includes Colorectal, Upper Gastrointestinal, Endocrine, Vascular and Breast surgery.

The department wishes to appoint a locum Consultant fixed term for 12 months in Colorectal and General Surgery with an interest Endoscopy. This 10 PA post has been developed in response to increasing demand in Endoscopy and endoscopic management of complex colorectal polyps.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder is expected to integrate within, and work alongside, the team of existing consultants in the Colorectal and General Surgery departments, as well as work within multidisciplinary teamsincluding healthcare professionals spanning the Oncology, Radiology and Gastroenterology departments. There will be an opportunity to work with consultant colleagues in the development of new, more effective, patient care pathways. JAG accreditation in colonoscopy is essential and there will be requirement for the successful candidate to provide regular diagnostic endoscopy lists. The successful applicant will join a 1-in-10 weekday and weekend general surgical on-call rota at CroydonUniversity Hospital. Opportunities can be provided to further develop additional sub-specialty interests dependant on the needs and existing provision in the Croydon Colorectal Service.

Job responsibilities

The Croydon Colorectal Service provides a broad spectrum of diagnostic and surgical care. Colorectal cancer diagnostic and surgical care is undertaken at Croydon University Hospital including TEMS for early rectal cancer. Oncological care is provided in conjunction with the Royal Marsden Hospital. The JAG-accredited Endoscopy unit provides a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy servicesincluding advanced polypectomy in the form of EMR and ESD as well as ERCP and EUS. The Pelvic Floor unit works closely with the Urogynaecology team in undertaking joint MDTs, clinics andoperating lists. Diagnostic services including endoanal and pelvic floor ultrasound and procedures including Laparoscopic VMR and Sacral Nerve Modulation are also undertaken. A broad remit ofprimary & re-operative IBD is undertaken and the care of IBD patients is undertaken in close conjunction with the Gastroenterology team including joint clinics and MDTs. Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction surgery is supported by a multi-specialty MDT and adjuncts including abdominal wall Botox therapy and both anterior and posterior component separation are routinely undertaken. The service contributes joint operating and MDT support to the BSGE-accredited Croydon Endometriosis Centre treating complex deep infiltrating endometriosis involving bowel.

The successful applicant should have an audit and research portfolio, with an ongoing interest in expanding the portfolio and experience in establishing research trials. They should also demonstrate management responsibilities and a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.

Applicants should either already be on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC), or within six months of eligibility to be included, and hold a license to practice.
