Job summary
The Children's Emergency Department is open 24 hrs a day and sees on average 90 - 120 children a day. The department is dynamic and progressive.
The Children's ED has been recently relocated and comprises of a minors/majors area, a 3 bedded short stay facility, a modernised resuscitation area and a separate waiting area. We are expecting some estates redevelopment in the near future to improve these facilities.
An opportunity now exists for Band 6/7 Paediatric nurses with extensive experience to extend their skills in a Children's ED environment working alongside a varied nursing workforce, Paediatric Emergency Consultants, ENP's and GP's in the newly established UTC.
The successful candidates would be working alongside four other paediatric band 7's, two of which are primarily responsible for the management of the nursing workforce and department. The successful candidate would manage their own team of staff for sickness, 1:1's, Appraisals and performance.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate would be working alongside a team of band 7's, all of whom have varying roles and responsibilities within the team to cover the whole seven day service.
This post supports providing senior experience within the nursing establishment to cover the seven day period, leading shifts and managing patient pathways improving clinical care and patient experience. Applicants must like a challenge, respond well to the demands of a busy department, have good communication skills and enjoy working at a fast pace in a multidisciplinary team.
Their main responsibilities would be managing the clinical pathways within the department, and being innovative with QI projects and initiating change and department progression. It would also include being the lead for a smaller nursing group of the team ensuring appraisals, 1:1's and staff welfare and performance are being addressed.
Any applicants would need to be a Children's ED clinical expert and role model to junior members of the nursing team. They would need to be able to demonstrate extensive ED experience at Band 6 level. Experience of completing appraisals, 1:1's and rosters are all advantageous.
Experience leading QI projects and nurse led discharge from triage, rapid triage, criteria led discharge from the short stay facility, Camhs/Mental health experience and other improvement initiatives are desirable.
