Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for surgical band 6 staff nurse to join our team at Lewisham hospital

Juniper ward is mixed surgical ward which specialises in general surgery, colo-rectal, and trauma and orthopaedics and ENT.

As a Band 6 Staff Nurse, we will offer you excellent support in your new role with support from senior nursing management team, the Practice Development Nurse and peer to peer support with lots of learning and development opportunities. We will also offer you one of a kind surgical nursing course in affiliate with the University of Greenwich which is also run in house. The nursing teams are committed to providing high-quality, safety-focused, and holistic care in a warm and friendly environment.

Main duties of the job

To provide leadership, guidance and support to all nursing staff within the clinical area, and continuous quality care to a specified group of patients. To take responsibility for the management and co-ordination of the clinical area in conjunction with and in the absence of the Manager. To provide support and expertise in the assessment, planning and evaluation of all patient care within the surgical setting. To assist in the budgetary management, training and development of staff to provide high quality care which is evidence-based.

Assist the Manager in providing advice, guidance, support and professional leadership for all nursing staff in the clinical area.

Continually assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based programmes of care in order to ensure the provision of a high standard of care.

Personally deliver a high standard of care to a group of patients, acting as a team leader / named nurse and clinical role model at all times.

Assist in developing the unit philosophy and framework of care in line with unit / organisational, beliefs / values and changes in surgery.

Ensure the provision of advice, support and health information to patients and their carers in order to promote a health-based service.

Ensure workload of nursing staff and colleagues does not jeopardise safe standards of practice and initiate action if necessary.

Ensure staffing rosters are covered following safer staffing.

In charge responsibilities ensuring that the patient flow is safe and escalating any delays to the teams if patients are delayed in being assessed.

Support induction, mentorship, and supervision of Band 5s, HCAs, and students.

Maintain clear, compassionate communication with patients and families and liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary team.

Ensure compliance with NMC Code and NHS Trust policies.Report incidents and contribute to learning from them and uphold safeguarding responsibilities for adults.
