Job summary
An exciting opportunity has risen for a clinical fellow to strengthen the hepatology serviceatQueen Elizabeth Hospital(QEH). This post is one ofseveral new funded roles who will support theexpansion ofviralhepatitis provision at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust(LGT).
The post holder will have the opportunity to develop wide experience within the department, with sessions being dedicated to clinical work (which will include outpatient clinics in Hepatology) with some flexible sessions to develop relevant interests, such asEndoscopyand Gastroenterology. The post could be tailored to specific interests within Hepatology/Hepatitis.An important componentof this post will be to support theViralHepatitis Network and its integrated pathways across primary and secondary careincluding liaison with King's College Hospital and Guy's and StThomas'NHS Foundation Trusts.
Main duties of the job
Attendance at five (5) clinical sessions per week. However, flexibility in covering clinical commitments will be required.
Weekly attendance at the Viral Hepatitis MDT hosted by KCH (this can be virtual) and ODN ops meetings as scheduled.
Requirement to support data collection and potential to work cross-site and develop specific projects.
The post holder could be involved in research projects. Previous areas of interest have been Hepatitis C and DAAs and more recently fibrosis and NAFLD and exploring the unique cohorts of HBV focus areas. Prior experience of research into these fields would be an advantage but is not mandatory.
Potential involvement in clinical trials (Phase 1- Phase 3)
One session is for administrative duties resulting from the clinical sessions for the writing of letters and the organisation and follow up of relevant investigations.
Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the Trust in such hospital, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.
Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
Act as a resource and support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of clinical trials.
To assist in clinical audits and research projects to improve care.

The post holder will be based atQEHto deliver aspects of the Hepatitis Operational Delivery Network as part of the Hepatology/Hepatitis team. The diverse patient population attendingQEHclinics also offers an excellent opportunity to undertake translational Hepatitis research projects or quality improvement initiatives. Our local London boroughs have some of the highest rates of chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C infectioninEngland. SinceMay2023, the emergency department atQEHhas provided opt-out testing for hepatitis B and C, in addition to HIV. The challenge now lies in linkage to care, ensuring patients diagnosed have access to treatment and monitoring. The hepatology service is also part of theSouthEastLondon Cancer Alliance (SELCA) and NHS England have recently prioritised the early diagnosis of liver cancer, with a focus onidentifyingpatients with cirrhosis who require surveillance. The opportunity has therefore arisen via the ODN to appoint a new clinical fellow to support regional work in both areas. There will be a strong focus on management and leadership, with opportunity to be involved at a regional level with quality improvement projects.
The post would suit an individual with specialty experience ingastroenterology/hepatology, ST3+ or equivalent, and would offer many opportunities to gain experience and skills in Hepatology and Gastroenterology for those wishing to apply for a training post in the future.
