Locum Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology

Job summary

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a whole time (10PA) fixed term locum Consultant in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine to be based mainly on the University Hospital Lewisham site as part of the development of the new general medical model and development of the Diabetes and Endocrinology service.

Main duties of the job

  • Participation in the acute general medical take, including weekends. consultant cover on a general medical ward. (Laurel)
  • Contribute to rapid reviews of in-patients with Diabetes and Endocrine problems
  • Provide post-graduate, undergraduate and AHP teaching and supervision
  • Provide services for type 1 diabetes, including pump and CGM, play a key role in diabetes technology MDT
  • Provide services for endocrinology service
  • Participate in providing input into the community diabetes service and do community clinics
  • Participate in rota to provide antenatal, bariatric and foot cover when colleagues are on leave
  • Contribute and develop young adults service and transition diabetes service

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will provide high quality health care for patients referred for diagnoses and treatment, including outpatients and inpatients. The post has a focus on delivering diabetes services and covering acute intake medical work and providing ongoing care to the patients admitted on the take.

General Responsibilities

1. To provide high quality health care for patients referred for diagnosis and treatment, including outpatients and inpatients.

2. To respond to inpatient and outpatient referrals from other specialties

3. To provide prompt effective advice for General Practitioners

4. To participate in educational and audit meetings

5. To meet CPD and revalidation requirements

6. To provide cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave

7. To support the Hospitals Clinical Governance Strategy

8. To contribute to all other aspects of the Directorate and Hospitals affairs, including relevant Consultant and Directorate Meetings

Diabetes and Endocrinology Medicine

1. To provide a consultant-led service in the specialty

2. To support and assist in the development of Diabetes services both in the hospital and in the community.

3. To contribute to research in Diabetes and endocrinology in an area of special interest

4. To contribute to meeting the NICE standards for Diabetes and endocrinology services

5. To contribute to meeting the 4-hour waiting time target in the Emergency Department

6. To contribute to other targets e.g. quality indicators for emergency department

Medical Education & Teaching

1. Supervise and teach medical students in both outpatient clinics and on the wards.

2. Supervise and manage trainee medical staff (in conjunction with the other consultants)

3. Contribute to regular training and teaching sessions for General Practitioners and to foster increased knowledge and skills within the local Medical Community

4. Volunteer as an Educational supervisor for doctors in training.

5. To provide post-graduate training in Diabetes and Endocrinology for all grades of Medical Staff and for non-medical clinical staff.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

1. Take part in clinical audit and implement audit findings as appropriate.

2. Engage in the active trust QI programme and training.

Continuing Professional Development

1. Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.

2. Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice.

3. Prepared to participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy.

4. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels

Policy, Planning and Management

1. Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.

2. Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
