Job summary

The Trust is seeking to appoint asubstantive part-time (0.6 WTE) Consultant Neurologistto join the team atUniversity Hospital Lewisham (UHL). This role will support the delivery of high-quality, timely neurological care for local patients and contribute to the continued development of the service within the Lewisham Medicine and Community Division.

The post holder will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team providing both inpatient and outpatient neurology services. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and strengthen local neurology provision, working closely with colleagues at regional neuroscience centres to improve access, continuity, and outcomes for patients with neurological conditions.

Applicants must be included on theGMC Specialist Register for Neurologyor be withinsix months of obtaining their CCT at the date of interview.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide acomprehensive, high-quality inpatient and outpatient neurology serviceat University Hospital Lewisham.

  • Deliver specialist advice and input for the management of patients admitted with neurological conditions, including ward reviews and multidisciplinary discussions.

  • Undertake regularoutpatient neurology clinics, ensuring timely assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients referred from primary and secondary care.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of clinical pathways to enhance local access to neurology expertise.

  • Work collaboratively with the wider neurology team, including consultant colleagues, specialist nurses, and allied health professionals, to deliver safe and effective patient care.

  • Contribute to theclinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activitiesof the department.

  • Support the education and training of medical students, junior doctors, and other healthcare staff.

  • Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) and maintain GMC revalidation requirements.

1.A part-time post-holder will be expected to undertake 2 neurology clinics each week (4hours each), andtosee predominantly new patients with some follow-up capacity built in. We would encourage colleagues to develop specialty clinics, provided that theyareofclinicalrelevancetotheserviceandlocalneeds.

2.There is a commitment to adequate levels of secretarial cover on each site. Consultants are provided with sufficient office space and IT support.

3.We provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites. Consultants participate in a rota to see ward referrals at UHL and QEH hospitals. We endeavour to see all referrals within 24 hours of referral. The workload varies but a reasonable expectation would be to see an average of 4-6 ward patients per session.
