Job summary
To assist in the provision of a high-quality diagnostic cellular pathology service, working in close cooperation with clinical staff and other medical professional and managerial colleagues.
Provision of a timely and accurate diagnostic pathology service.
Participation in the management and development of the service.
Histopathology provides a comprehensive range of immunohistochemistry. Specialist services, including molecular pathology are accessible from the SE London network.
Main duties of the job
The post is for 10 programmed activities (8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA). Reporting is undertaken on a rota basis and the appointee will be expected to share equitably in cut-up, histopathology and non-gynae cytopathology reporting and participate in MDT meetings.
The appointee will be expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a reliable and expeditious service.
The major clinical specialties covered include general medical, general surgical, skin, lung, breast (not screening), head and neck, gynaecology and gastrointestinal (including bowel cancer screening cases). There is no requirement for participation in cervical screening cytopathology, which has been centralised offsite within London. However, the department undertakes reporting of cervical surgical biopsies, including loop excision biopsies.
It is anticipated that the appointee will have a generalist commitment but also bring or develop their own special interests to flexibly integrate with those of the existing consultants by mutual agreement.
The appointee will participate in the Regional General Histopathology EQA scheme, Bowel cancer Screening EQA scheme and other EQA schemes as appropriate. The appointee will be expected to participate in the management of the service at some point.
The post holder may be asked to undertake other duties in line with this grade of post as may be required by the Clinical Director from time to time.
