Junior Sister/ Charge Nurse - Emergency Department

Job summary

Our ED sees in excess of 90,000 adult patients per year who present with a varied and diverse mix of clinical presentations and needs. The department moves at a fast pace and is often challenging providing a stimulating and supportive environment in which to work .

To provide sound professional leadership to staff at band 5 grade level and below. Work closely with the Department senior sister / charge nurse and provide a support mechanism for them. To ensure that all activities in the area are carried out within Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust policy guidelines. To promote the objectives of the Trust's Vision and Philosophy for Nursing. To ensure that all duties are carried out in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). To assist in the implementation of national improvement initiatives and targets i.e. 4 hour target, The NHS Plan, National Service Frameworks, Essence of Care and clinical governance. To take charge of patients care in the Resuscitation area and across all areas of the department.

Main duties of the job

We currently have vacancies at band 6

You will need to be a clinical expert within the speciality of ED nursing, have the ability to lead, manage guide and direct others, and work closely within the ED and wider Multidisciplinary teams within the Trust.

You should be committed to the ongoing development of ED nursing and to the service we provide to our patients and staff. In return you will gain experience in all areas, within a progressive department that has numerous opportunities for development.

You will be well lead and supported within the wider ED team and by our full time practice development team and excellent senior nursing team.

Assist the department senior sister/charge nurse in assessing the priorities of patient care and the staffing requirements.

Actively managing the 4-hour target.

Designated responsibility for the management of the unit on a day-to-day basis.

To ensure that the work environment is a safe environment for patients, staff, and the public.

Be familiar with the Trust policies eg Fire, Violence, Major Incident and Bomb Alert and at times co ordinate for the ward and the unit.

Ensure that you and the qualified staff maintain confidentiality in relation to information about patients, staff, and other health service providers in accordance with the Data Protection Act and the Coldicott Guidelines.

Assist the department senior sister/charge nurse with the effective use of resources.

Monitor standards of quality nursing care.

Effectively communicate within the department at all times.

Handle and report complaints made by patients and members of the public in accordance with Trust policy in the absence of the department senior sister/charge nurse and feed back to your manager as necessary
