Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

1. A part-time post-holder will be expected to undertake 2 neurology clinics each week (4 hours each), and to see predominantly new patients with some follow-up capacity built in. We would encourage colleagues to develop specialty clinics, provided that they are of clinical relevance to the service and local needs.

2. There is a commitment to adequate levels of secretarial cover on each site. Consultants are provided with sufficient office space and IT support.

3. We provide five-day ward consultation services on both sites. Consultants participate in a rota to see ward referrals at UHL and QEH hospitals. We endeavour to see all referrals within 24 hours of referral. The workload varies but a reasonable expectation would be to see an average of 4-6 ward patients per session.

4. There is currently no on-call commitment.

Medical Education & Teaching

Candidates are expected to contribute to departmental educational meetings and clinical supervision of doctors in training

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

Undertake or supervise clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance requirements

Continuing Professional Development

1. Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level
2. Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice:
   1. Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy, in line with the Trusts commitment to supporting revalidation
   2. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
   3. The Trust is committed to providing mentoring to newly appointed consultants

Policy, Planning and Management

1. Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care
2. Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines
3. Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service
4. Comply with all Trust policies

Qualifications

Essential

• oMBBS or equivalent
• oFully Registered with the GMC and hold a License to Practice
• oMRCP or equivalent
• oOn the GMC Specialist Register for Neurology or CCT for Neurology or within six months of obtaining CCT at interview date
• oSpecialist qualification in neurology

Desirable

• oDistinctions, scholarships, prizes
• oOther degrees, e.g. BSc MSc, MD
• oSub specialist interest

Clinical Experience

Essential

• oCompleted registrar training

Desirable

• oExperience of working as an independent consultant

Clinical Audit

Essential

• oThorough understanding of medical audit
• oUndertaken and completed audits

Desirable

• oExperience as audit lead

Teaching Experience

Essential

• oExperience of postgraduate/undergraduate/ interdisciplinary teaching

Desirable

• oHigher qualification in medical education
• oEvidence of training and experience as an educational supervisor
• oEvidence of having developed novel educational methods or courses

Management & Administartive Experience

Essential

• oUnderstand NHS funding arrangements
• oEvidence of contribution to service development or improvement

Desirable

• oHigher qualifications in management

Research Experience

Essential

• oUnderstand the principles of research

Desirable

• oExperience in clinical research with a higher research degree
• oPublications
• oWillingness to participate and contribute with any ongoing and new clinical research in the department
