Job summary

We are excited to announce an opportunity for a Band 5 Nurse to join our School Nursing Safeguarding Team on a fixed term contract . As part of our commitment to growing and developing our workforce, we are also aiming to retain the successful candidate and support their progression into the SCPHN (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse) School Nurse pathway.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to apply for a funded SCPHN School Nurse training programme, starting in January 2026, through an internal interview and selection process. This position provides a unique chance to be part of a dynamic team while building a long-term career in school nursing.

The team is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse who is passionate about the 5-19 Healthy Child Programme and safeguarding children and young people. It is desirable that candidates have experience working with children in a community setting and possess a good understanding of public health.

We are recruiting with a vision to train and develop future SCPHN School Nurses within our service.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively as part of a dynamic skill-mix team. Key responsibilities include conducting Health Needs Assessments, attending child protection case conferences, core group meetings, and other strategy meetings. etc

To ensure readiness for these responsibilities, the successful candidate will be provided with a comprehensive competency document and will only work unsupervised once deemed competent. They will be entrusted with a caseload of primary schools, allowing them to build strong connections and deliver effective support to children and families. Additionally, the role offers the opportunity to visit other teams within the service, enabling broader exposure and professional development.

  • RGN and /or RSCN RN child Branch degree/diploma
  • Evidence of Professional knowledge about nursing services for the school aged population

Desirable

  • ENB 998
  • Health Promotion training
  • Mentorship training

Experience, Skills and abilities

Essential

  • Previous experience in working with children, and in school nursing
  • Experience in safeguarding children.
  • Experience in attending case conferences, child in need meetings, completing health assessments and reports to this regard. Ability to complete a LAC assessment.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in an effective way with people from a variety of backgrounds and different ages
  • Good organisational skills
  • Able to prioritise
  • Awareness of the role of the school nurse -
  • Knowledge of the DH drivers for the delivery of a public health service for the school age population. Eg. Childhood measurement programme Healthy weight healthy lives Every child Matters Understand "Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives" strategy.
  • Local influences in Lewisham e.g Children and Young people's plan 2009-15 Aware of NMC code of conduct
  • Willing to participate in developing professional / practice guidelines and standards
  • Ability to prioritise and organise workload effectively
  • Recent previous experience within a comparable role
  • Competent IT skills - including use of email
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and good communication skills, including with children and young people
  • Able to present information, written and orally, in a clear and logical manner
  • Ability to work contracted hours
