Paediatric Staff Nurse - Emergency Department

Job summary

The Children's Emergency Department is open 24 hrs a day and sees on average 90 - 100 children a day. The department is dynamic and progressive.

Due to Covid-19 and the relocation of our Children's ED an opportunity has arisen to increase our staffing establishment for band 5 staff nurses to extend their development in a Children's environment working alongside Children's nurses, Consultants, ENPs and GPs.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are an overseas trained Nurse in the UK, you will need to have CBT and English Language Test (IELTS or OET) completed in the last 6 months and OSCE Ready for Paediatrics Nursing. You also need to ensure that CBT and English Language test meets the NMC required level. OR have NMC registration with Paediatrics.

Main duties of the job

You will gain numerous paediatric emergency nursing skills, through university and in-house training, including; triage, plaster of pairs, venepuncture and cannulation, APLS/EPLS, Pan London ED course and much more.

To assist senior nursing staff in the clinical management of the department, maintaining high standards of nursing practice and promoting the philosophy of child and family centred care.

Key Result Areas

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. As a member of the nursing team participate in maintaining good working relationships and promote good communications within the emergency department environment.
  1. To assist in maintaining the health and safety requirements of all children and young persons, carers, visitors and staff.
  1. To be an active member of the team contributing ideas to improve/maintain efficiency within the area and utilise resources effectively.
  1. Is familiar with national and agreed Division/Trust policies and procedures and will apply them in her/his practice.
  1. Reports any accidents/untoward incidents/unsafe practices involving children/ carers and/or staff to the Clinical Nurse Manager/Modern Matron/Head of Childrens Nursing in line with Trust policy.
  1. Will be required to undertake training and demonstrate competency following this with all equipment introduced to their practice area, so they can be used appropriately and safely.
  1. Participate in and contribute to meetings relevant to their role and practice area.
  2. To participate in the assessment of performance of learners and untrained staff.
  3. To utilise evidence based findings when delivering nursing care.
  4. To actively contribute towards a happy and therapeutic environment and to the working of the multi-disciplinary ward team.
  1. To be responsible for her/his own professional development including the Scope of Professional Practice and participate in Personal Development Plan and

  1. Is responsible for maintaining complete, legible up to date records of nursing care in line with NMC(2008) guidelines.
  1. Having undertaken the appropriate training act as a Practice Assessor for Diploma/Degree students on ward.
  1. To actively participate in the Unit teaching programme through demonstration and direct supervision.
  1. To participate in the education of the child and family regarding aspects of care and promotion of health and the prevention of illness.
  1. Participate in the implementation of clinical supervision to enable childrens nurses to provide high quality care to children and their carers.
