Consultant O&G - Labour Ward Lead and High-Risk Obstetrics

Job summary

The post holder will be expected to be the lead for the Labour ward and to develop antenatal and postnatal pathways, working in close collaboration with other consultants. Ideally, we are looking for an individual with highly developed skills in High-risk obstetrics, as well as the drive and ambition to enhance and develop the existing service.

The successful candidate should also be able to assist the department and other consultant colleagues in managing complex Obstetric cases. The successful candidate will also have a commitment to general obstetrics and gynaecology.

This is a substantive post and creates the opportunity to further develop the specialist obstetric services offered according to the applicant's special interests and to work closely with our existing team of consultants providing services to a multi-ethnic and diverse local population within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, London Borough of Bexley and London Borough of Lewisham.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will initially be on a 10 PA contract which will be reviewed after 3 months in post and then annually. On call and emergency duties will be fulfilled in priority to elective work. The indicative timetable is shown below, but these may be subject to slight variation depending on the special interests of the successful candidates. All job plans are offered in line with the Trust policy on consultant job planning. Job plans are set electronically and SPA time is calculated at 1.5 PAs for core requirements such as mandatory training, appraisal, audit, governance work etc. Clinical administration will be allocated on the basis of 25% of the clinical time available.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

In Maternity, you will be required to run the one stop preterm birth service and a high-risk antenatal clinic depending on the skills and experience of the post holder. The referral criteria for this clinic can be amended based on the postholders experience.

In gynaecology, you will be required to share the general and acute gynaecology referrals. Skills with procedures such as outpatient hysteroscopy, in patient minor gynaecological procedures will complement the services within the department.

The post holder will need to show greater interest in clinical governance and willing to lead on changes required to deliver highest standards of maternal medicine services.

Medical education and training of junior doctors in training is core requirement of this consultant appointment to ensure delivery of safe services and post holder must be willing to train junior doctors in intermediate and advanced training during working hours as well as out of hours. Senior consultants are accessible for support and this is encouraged. Labour ward work, management of high-risk pregnancies and complex obstetrics theatre lists during on calls is pivotal to services at DGH level, and the post holder is expected to contribute to safe gynaecological services in line with the nationally initiated transformation. Contribution to care of both inpatient and outpatient service is required. Willingness to work flexibly and to adapt to the changing needs of the service is essential.
