Job summary

To provide expert autonomous clinical care for patients attending the Emergency Department / Urgent Care Centre.

The post holder will assess and order appropriate investigations, diagnose and treat patients within departmental parameters of practice and clinical guidelines/protocols, discharge or refer to specialist team, those patients who wish to be seen by an Emergency Clinical Practitioner / Emergency Nurse Practitioner without initial reference to a doctor.

The post holder will support the Lead ENP and Matrons in set ways in which the patients are managed and in the implementation of necessary changes according to local and national targets.

Main duties of the job

The assessment, examination, diagnosis and referral of patients attending the Urgent Care Centre with a minor injury or minor illness.

Act as a role model and a resource to colleagues and all members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Participate in the orientation of all new members of staff and students to the ED/UCC

Act as a trainer and assessor to post-registration students within agreed parameters of practice

Facilitate educational practice development for junior staff within the department giving appropriate teaching, support and guidance in accordance with the department's objectives

Participates in in-house teaching programmes

Job responsibilities

Through evidence based practice, autonomously assess, treat and discharge patients against defined parameters of practice, including specialist referral; within own Scope of Professional Practice and professional body (NMC / HCPC)

Obtain history; examine patient; initiate/interpret investigations and develop/carry out treatment plans as appropriate on patients with complaints/injuries. Those with conditions outside Parameters of Practice need to be referred for review by a doctor or on-call team

Act on behalf of or at the discretion of the senior ED team, in setting standards of care

Orders necessary investigations, and provides initial interpretation of results and delivers treatment and care both individually, as part of a team, and through referral to other agencies.

Prescribe and administer a range of medication according to patient group directives and in accordance with Trust Policy and / or approved nurse prescribing qualification as appropriate

Work in collaboration with the senior ED staff and other agencies to ensure appropriate management of ongoing care, and monitor the planning, delivering and evaluation of individualised nursing care by initiating regular audit in line with clinical effectiveness

Participate in Clinical Benchmarking as appropriate

Performs a range of expanded/advanced level practice, including manipulation of fractures and joints

Identifies children and/or vulnerable adults who have been or are at risk of being harmed and/or neglected, and is aware of how to report this

Provide accurate records, which are complete, legible and reflect the holistic assessment according to clinical guidelines and local policy whilst demonstrating the need for respecting confidentiality

Work in conjunction with the senior ED team to ensure that the Divisional aims and objectives are maintained.

Awareness of local, national and international health improvement/public health initiatives and/or legislations

Understands mechanisms for reporting infectious diseases

Be responsible for establishing an environment, which promotes academic and practice credibility.
