Job summary
The LGT RDC service went live in September 2022 and was designed to improve cancer diagnostic pathways, patient care and experience. We work alongside and collaboratively with the RDCs at Guys Hospital (GSTT) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRUH) to provide cover for all patients in South East London and operate under guidance from SELCA (South East London Cancer Alliance). We all follow the same principles and guidelines in providing a shared approach to triaging and investigating patients referred with nonspecific symptoms suggestive of cancer.
We are now seeking to employ an additional General Practitioner with a specialist interest in oncology and diagnostics to join our dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team, to further develop, deliver and embed our innovative model of care. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new innovative approach to early cancer diagnosis.
Main duties of the job
Specifically the post-holder will deliver general medical and diagnostic expertise in the outpatient QEH RDC. Also, this position will be to help build primary and secondary care links across the South East London network to help improve patient access to RDCs.
Candidates are expected to be experienced GPs with interest in diagnostics, ideally with robust working knowledge of local cancer referral pathways. A good clinician keen to work across care boundaries to produce more effective and innovative service delivery.
The post holder will work in the Outpatient RDC
- Deliver clinical care within the RDC
- Help oversee Advanced Nurse Practitioners working within the service
- Develop, implement, and evaluate new pathways of care for RDC patients especially across primary and secondary care
- Provide education and training to RDC clinical team
- Develop on existing primary care relationships and increase the profile of the RDC within South East London
- The ability to partake in service evaluation, research and education opportunities.

The post-holder will be accountable to Dr Sarah Weild, Clinical Lead for the LGT RDC and Dr Jim Milton, Clinical Director of Acute & General Medicine.
Provide High Quality Care to Patients
- The post holder must be medically qualified and hold a licence to practice in relevant specialties
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
Clinical Roles:
- Delivery of 3 clinical sessions (1 and a half days) this would include a full day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the Outpatient clinic with a half day for telephone follow-up consultations and clinical administration (can be done remotely). This will involve a combination of triage discussion of primary care referrals with Advanced Nurse Practitioners as well as seeing new patients referred to the service and undertaking telephone follow up
- 1 non-clinical session (half day) for training, GP networking and service delivery or research/education
- Multidisciplinary team meeting with other RDC members on a weekly basis in order to discuss ongoing referrals & difficult cases
- Provision of advice to primary care referrers directly during clinical session if required
Research, Teaching and Training
- There is opportunity for developing interests in education, research and training
- The main teaching and training commitment will be with engagement of local GPs to promote the service within primary care and the Trust, increasing links and building relationships between services and departments. Further opportunities for developing interests in education, research and training can be discussed.
