An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Cancer Services at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust as a Band 5 Cancer Data Officer.

The role will primarily be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital with cross site working at University Hospital Lewisham. There is a regular shuttle bus between both sites taking between 20-30 minutes.

Main duties of the job

To work with clinical and non-clinical teams to support the recording of cancer data in line with national cancer wait time (CWT) guideline and will facilitate data collection for suspected/diagnosed cancer patients, entering the information onto appropriate database(s).

To prepare routine and ad hoc reports for the Trust and external stakeholders as part of their daily reporting, analysis and data collection for cancer waiting times monitoring.

To participate in the further development of cancer information systems across the Trust.

To assist the Cancer managers in providing training to others.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY:

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the recording of cancer data in line with national cancer wait time (CWT) guideline and will facilitate data collection for suspected/ diagnosed cancer patients, entering the information onto appropriate database(s). The post holder will assist the Cancer Data Management team and work with the MDT Co-ordinators/Pathway Trackers, to coordinate the collection, reporting and analysis of cancer data; ensuring that trust-wide cancer data collection mechanisms are robust and supporting the delivery of the Best Practice Timed Pathways (BPTP) in line with national cancer data collection for Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) and CWT.

The post holder will work with clinical and admin teams across the trust to promote effective working practices to ensure that all patients with cancer or the suspicion of cancer are treated within target times.

Main Responsibilities:

Information Systems and Data Management

  • To work with the clinical and administrative teams to ensure systems and processes are in place for accurate data capture, as far as possible in real time.
  • To ensure appropriate data validation / data quality checks are routinely carried out and that missing or inaccurate data is followed up pro-actively.
  • To support clinical teams in completing best practice timed cancer pathways (BPTP); ensuring these datasets are recorded, validated and submitted within the deadlines (as well as other datasets as guided by Service Manager).
  • Link in with the Business Information Unit and SELCA to ensure cross checking of data and contribute to the continuous development of information systems to improve data collection.
  • Liaise with colleagues at other Trusts to ensure data is accurate for patients who are transferred to and from Lewisham Greenwich NHS Trust.
  • To ensure that cancer data is reported to the Trust and the Department of Health within appropriate timescales.
  • Provide training to cancer workforce on the data recording systems in use according to the trust policy
  • Initiates and plans statistical /analytical work programmes based on the requirements of clinical teams, researchers and other stakeholders.

Reporting, analysis and data collection for cancer waiting times monitoring:

  • To prepare routine and ad hoc reports for the Trust and SELCA. Present data at meetings, when required. Provide timely and accurate monthly data for the Cancer Dashboard, COSD & BPTP reports.
  • To produce exception reports regarding validation within agreed deadlines.
  • To compile regular monitoring reports indicating progress towards agreed standards and highlighted problem areas.
  • To produce and submit other reports in a timely fashion when required
  • Ensure the cancer database is updated in a timely and accurate manner to enable the clinical teams to meet the cancer targets.
  • Maintain close communication with the MDT co-ordinators and Cancer pathway Trackers updating them on a regular basis on work progress and alerting them to of any concerns in data capture trends.

Service Development

  • To participate in the further development of cancer information systems across the Trust.
  • Audit compliance and adhering to the recording of cancer data.
  • To provide data for service improvement as requested.by the services.

Education and Training

  • To maintain knowledge of local and national standards and ensure that information regarding new developments or changes to these standards, is effectively communicated.
  • To work with all multi-disciplinary teams to ensure that teams are aware of Cancer Waiting Times and BPTP requirements.
  • To work with all multi-disciplinary teams to improve the standard of recording information on the key milestones in the patients journey through diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assist the Cancer managers in providing training to others.

  • oDegree level qualification or equivalent clinical / healthcare knowledge, skills and experience
  • oExcellent computer literacy, ability to use MSWord and Excel to a high standard including analysis and report production
  • oA demonstrable capacity and capability for operational/clinical service management at middle level in an acute hospital environment or similarly complex organisation.

Experience & Knowledge

  • oMinimum three-year experience of working in the NHS, in a Band 4 or above position
  • oFamiliarity with NHS clinical and information processes and systems such as Cerner (LGT iCare), Somerset Cancer registry system, Pathology (Winpath) and Imaging systems (PACS) & NHS digital.
