Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinical pharmacist, to lead and develop the pharmacy service to the Division of Surgery and Theatres at the QEW site. The post-holder will work together with the Principal Pharmacist for Surgery and Theatres and be responsible for expanding, and developing the pharmacy service to Surgery and Theatres across the Trust.

This post is a permanent post, and is an excellent opportunity for a clinical pharmacist, with experience working in surgery, and a desire to develop their leadership and management skills. You will be leading a small, but dedicated team of pharmacists and technical staff, working together with the Multidisciplinary Surgical Team, to improve outcomes for surgical patients at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

You will be expected to lead and develop the ward based pharmacy service at LGT, which will be pivotal in improving services to patients, and stream-line the discharge process, and improve patient flow. You will lead and develop pharmacy services to Elective Care and Urology and also be responsible for the delivery of the pharmacy service to Surgery, Theatres and the Acute Pain team.

Main duties of the job

  • To be responsible for the coordination and delivery of a responsive, proactive, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service to the Surgery division at the respective site. This will include the promotion of safe, effective and cost effective drug use to facilitate patient admission and enhance continuity of care across the primary and secondary care interface.
  • To act as a role model and provide a consistently high standard of pharmaceutical service to patients in line with the Trust and Departmental objectives.
  • To support the division in managing their drugs budget and act as the point of liaison for any service developments that involves medicines or pharmacy services in Surgery & Theatres.
  • To provide operational and clinical support to the pharmacy department as dictated by the needs of the clinical pharmacy service. This includes supervision, training and support to junior pharmacists, pre-registration pharmacists and other pharmacy staff as necessary.
  • To deputise for the Principal Pharmacist for Surgery and Theatres.

  1. To participate in Surgical consultant post-take ward rounds to identify and resolve pharmaceutical care needs of patients and ensure that any follow up plans are shared with the ward based pharmacy team and medical staff as appropriate.
  1. To lead the training programme for pharmacists providing service to wards within Surgery and post-take ward rounds to ensure efficient and safe provision of clinical pharmacy service.
  1. To be accredited for discharge prescription transcribing/drug listing in order to facilitate patients discharge process.
  1. To support the investigation of medication related incidents and formulation/ delivery of action plans to address any problems identified within Surgery & Theatres.

Leadership & Service Development

  1. To lead and develop the clinical pharmacy service to the division for wards and departments within division. This includes setting and monitoring quality standards for clinical pharmacy services and the provision of feedback to the Principal Pharmacist for Surgery, theatres & Anaesthetics.
  1. To provide the Director of Pharmacy with details of output, performance and activity at specified time intervals in a format agreed with the Director of Pharmacy.
  1. To identify resources required to improve pharmacy services within the division.
  1. To support the development, implementation and adherence to local and national guidelines/policies to ensure cost-effective and safe prescribing within the division.
