Are you a keen newly qualified midwife seeking your first position as a midwife? We have converted our maternity leave positions to enable newly qualified midwives who are yet to secure a role, the opportunity to join our team on a 6m fixed term contract. You will be supported to join the staff bank and we will commit to continuing to support you for a further 12m while you undertake bank shifts to allow you to complete your preceptorship flexibly during this period should you wish to.

The supported sign off is new for the Trust and should you be shortlisted further information about the programme will be available along with the requirements for sign off in this programme.

Please note, unfortunately for this role we are unable to offer visa sponsorship.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an assessment centre, you will be required to pass the practical element before progressing to interview on the same day.

Main duties of the job

The hospital rotation could include working on the Hospital Birth Centre (Obstetric Labour Ward), Postnatal Ward or the Antenatal Ward. Bank work is subject to availability in each area.

We have an extensive preceptorship package which includes alongside your mandatory training - Simulation skills, IV Cannulation, Suturing, Bereavement, Screening study days with orientation in each new area.

You will be supported to develop your competencies in suturing and cannulation. You will be expected to participate in the care of women requiring both high and low risk care, bereavement care, induction of labour and the immediate postnatal period. We work as part of a MDT and you will liaise with and receive support from other health care professionals on the ward such as doctors, nurses and more senior midwives.

You will be supported by our Senior Midwifery Team, Practice leaders, our PMAs and PDM team to build on your skills and confidence as you progress through your preceptorship.

You will only be signed off for preceptorship if you have completed a minimum of 780 additional midwifery hours after your 6m fixed term contract and all other competencies and requirements have been completed.

Clinical Duties

Responsible for carrying out clinical practice within designated clinical areas,

ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based midwifery assessment care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for women and babies is provided from admission through to discharge.

Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

To act as advocate for women within the area, to ensure a woman centred approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.

To ensure that mothers and babies receive high quality evidence based care and a positive patient experience, respecting their individual needs, preferences, cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Recognise avoid and report situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.

Will advise on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness.

Recognise the significance of clinical observations made, and use them to develop and initiate midwifery assessments and devise a plan of care, escalating where appropriate.

Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a mother and babys clinical care and wellbeing.

Will ensure that all mothers and babies will have a discharge plan that is safe and appropriate for their needs.

Carry out midwifery procedures and treatments, checking on and maintaining the highest possible standards.

Take appropriate personal protective measures including correct use of equipment to prevent and minimise risk of exposure to body fluids, and safely dispose of sharps and clinical waste.

Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.

Will act in accordance with Local, Hospital and Statutory Guidelines & Policies including Health and Safety initiatives.

Will be familiar with the Health and Safety at Works Act, and be aware of Its implications and ensure that local unit and departmental policies are followed.

Will work in accordance with Corporate Objectives

Will compile a personal & professional portfolio for preceptorship as a newly qualified midwife and future revalidation (in conjunction with the compilation of a Personal Development Plan).

Will maintain a high standard of care and be courteous and polite at all times.

Provide total care to a caseload of women in liaison with the other staff and under the direction of the MPL or senior midwife.

Will adopt a woman centred approach to clinical practice.

In liaison with the MPL ensure that midwifery practice is in keeping with current research findings and is appropriate for each individual woman for whom care is being provided.
