An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust as a Locum Consultant in General Anaesthesia, within a leading peri-operative medicine directorate.
We are seeking a motivated Consultant Anaesthetist committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within a complex, high-volume environment. The successful candidate will join a collaborative multidisciplinary team with a strong focus on clinical excellence, innovation, education, and quality improvement.
Applicants must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise and be on the Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (or within six months of CCT).
This role offers the opportunity to work within a major London teaching hospital, contribute to a diverse surgical caseload, and engage in teaching, research, and service development
Main duties of the job
This is a primarily clinical role delivering anaesthetic services across Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital sites, including the High Volume Low Complexity Hub at Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.
The post is a full-time 10 PA position, comprising 9 PAs of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 PA of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).
The successful candidate will:
- Provide high-quality anaesthesia across a range of elective surgical services, including theatre work and peri-operative care
- Undertake pre-operative assessment and optimisation of patients
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient patient pathways
- Contribute to teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
- Support service development and operational performance within the directorate
Clinical work is typically undertaken over five days (Monday-Friday), with participation in a 1:10 weekend rota, reflecting the Trust's commitment to flexible service delivery.
A detailed job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Director, aligning service needs, individual interests, and professional development.

The post holder will join a busy and high-performing department, delivering elective anaesthetic care across multiple Trust sites. The role covers general anaesthesia, with opportunities to contribute to specialist services aligned to individual expertise, including areas such as cardiothoracic, vascular, regional anaesthesia, orthopaedics, and major surgery.
The role does not include participation in the on-call rota, but includes a flexible working pattern to support service delivery.
