Job responsibilities
The post holder will provide the infection support for the Guys hospital site, though the post is part of a rotation that supports routine clinical infection work at Guys, the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.
The DoI provides specialist clinical care across a wide range of tertiary specialities across the 5 hospital sites.
In addition, we are one of five units in the national network for High Consequence Infectious Diseases-airborne pathogens (HCID-a) and we provide a commissioned multi-drug resistant tuberculosis service.
GSTT and RBH combined have one of the largest Critical Care services in the country including hosting the two largest ECMO centres (RBH and STH).
Guys hospital hosts the regional centre for Renal and Urological services including transplant and the Regional hub for Cancer Services.
The merger with the RBH Hospitals provides clinical, diagnostic and research excellence in cardio-respiratory infections in cohorts of patients with acute and chronic cardiorespiratory disease including infective endocarditis, transplantation, device infections, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and fungal and mycobacterial disease.
The DOI also serves a growing and increasingly complex iatrogenically immunocompromised adult and paediatric patient cohort, across oncology and solid organ transplant (heart, lung, renal and pancreas).
Under the DoIs leadership, GSTT has delivered amongst the best IPC performance in the Shelford group of Englands 10 leading academic healthcare organisations and is widely regarded as a national exemplar.
Reflecting the importance of IPC across the entire Trust, Infection is a stand-alone Directorate within the office of the Chief Nurse (Ms Avey Bhatia), with a direct reporting line to the GSTT Board.
Research at RBH is closely linked with the National Heart and Lung Institute, which is a constituent division of Imperial College School of Medicine. At the last research assessment exercise, the clinical research carried out jointly between the hospital and NHLI was awarded a 5* rating (the highest possible rating, shared by only two other UK establishments).
Abundant translational research opportunities also are provided by the DoIs unique Centre for Infection & Diagnostic Research in close partnership with the KCL School of Immunology and Microbial Sciences (Tier 4 Unit) with the BRC Infection and Immunity theme.
Evelina London provides comprehensive health services from pre-conception through to adult life, as well as providing specialist care for families around the UK and across the world. As the only NHS Trust in London with womens and specialist childrens services on one site, Evelina London has unique opportunities to provide excellent, high-quality, integrated care for mothers, babies and children.
Guys & St Thomas is a large and popular ID post-graduate centre for dual training in both ID/GIM and ID/Medical Microbiology-Virology (MMV).
Dependant on skill set there would be an expectation to support the Infection Sciences laboratory services alongside the other site microbiologists. Laboratory duties will include result authorisation, contribution to the day-to-day running of the diagnostic service, troubleshooting of unexpected results and active participation in laboratory management and development. Alongside existing RBHH and GSTT, and KCH and PRUH, consultant colleagues they will also support the work embedding services into the new large, multi-hospital offsite laboratory hub which opened in Autumn 2025.
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the induction and training of the StRs rotating to Microbiology/Virology/Infectious Diseases and may be required to take an active part in postgraduate teaching and training and participate in KCL Medical School undergraduate teaching in years 2 and 3.
The post-holder will be expected to provide trainee clinical supervision on a daily basis and participate in teaching and training programmes.
Work closely with clinical teams, pharmacists and the IPC nursing team to support and develop local clinical guidelines, manage outbreaks, and deliver key performance objectives (e.g. C. difficile, blood stream infections etc.) and staff education/training. There will be a particular focus on leading antimicrobial stewardship within Cancer and Surgery on the Guys Hospital site (bacterial and fungal).
All consultants will have PA allocation for specific responsibilities e.g. antimicrobial stewardship, IPC, clinic, OPAT.
The post-holder will participate in the non-resident on-call rota which will be shared equally with the other consultants in the Microbiology section. Weekend authorisation is performed by the on-call Infection consultant, this can be done remotely, and no weekend on-site presence is generally required.
If CCT dual accreditation is in ID/GIM, there would be an equal intention to support the Infection Sciences laboratory services alongside result authorisation, and participation in the non-resident on-call rota for microbiology after a suitable period of time. Prospective applicants would be expected to have experience through previous training or prior employment in Microbiology to enable delivery of this essential service. Exact arrangements can be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Job Planning:
The post holders job plan is anticipated to contain 10 Programmed Activities (PA) per week, to be carried out primarily one site at any one time. Below is an example outline programme based on 10 PAs but the exact job plan will vary dependant on site of working and discussed with the Clinical Director and Service Leads prior to any start date, particularly in order to reflect specific responsibilities that are agreed i.e. Infection Control (1PA), antimicrobial stewardship (1PA) OPAT (1PA). The job plan will also be negotiated between the Consultant and their Clinical Lead at least annually.

Proposed timetable:
Final agreement on timetabled commitments will be agreed on taking up the post and then reviewed at least annually as part of the job planning process. As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends or asked to work of any of the trust sites.

For the first year, participate in a 1 in 5 ID/Microbiology on-call rota dependant on site of work GSTT or RBHH (Category A) in order to authorise and communicate significant laboratory results, and provide specialist clinical advice.
In addition, after the first year and depending upon clinical experience and skills, the post-holder will also be offered the chance participate in the rota for rare admissions to the HCID-a unit at St Thomas.
