About us
Each year the Breast Unit at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital treats over 450 new cases of breast cancer. The aspiration of the Unit is to diagnose patients in a timely and sensitive manner and guide them through a seamless pathway with availability state of the art breast surgery, customised reconstruction when necessary and multidisciplinary oncological involvement so that as many as possible are able to participate in randomised trials and clinical research.
Symptomatic cases are derived from One-stop clinics based at Guy's and at UHL (outreach clinics). NHSBSP (screening) cases are assessed at SE London Screening Centre (KCH) or through remote MDMs and then seen by the Guy's Team, given the diagnosis and the treatment is carried out at Guy's. One-stop clinics are supported by our registrars and Advanced Nurse Practitioners. The aim is to assess all referred symptomatic referrals within 10 days and to give cancer cases their definitive diagnosis and treatment plan as swiftly as possible after. To this end there are two multidisciplinary meetings every week, with results clinics being supported by a team of breast care nurses.
Experience in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery is essential as are any additional qualifications in these fields, to support a busy service. A higher research qualification / experience is also desirable to help strengthen the research portfolio.
