Job summary
The Upper GI Unit provides care for people with a wide range of benign and malignant oesophago-gastric conditions. The unit performs a high volume of benign UGI procedures, including anti-reflux surgery, revisional anti-reflux surgery, large para-oesophageal hernia repair, treatment of achalasia (surgical and POEM) and provides an acute biliary service for people with complications of gallstones. Fellows will also gain exposure to a broad range of emergency UGI presentations such as oesophageal perforation and incarcerated hiatal hernias.
The Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR) and Complex Hernia Unit is a well-recognised tertiary referral centre managing a wide spectrum of hernia disease, ranging from primary and recurrent inguinal and ventral hernias to complex tertiary referrals such as loss of domain, infected mesh, giant incisional hernias, parastomal hernias, and multi-specialty joint cases. The unit has significant expertise in both open and minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and hybrid approaches. Fellows will gain exposure to high-volume, complex hernia surgery, joint operating with plastic surgery, and the full pathway of patient management from outpatient referral to advanced operative intervention.
Main duties of the job
- Gain experience in laparoscopic benign UGI surgery, flexible endoscopy, and day-case surgery.
- Contribute to the care of emergency UGI presentations such as oesophageal perforation and incarcerated hiatal hernia.
- Participate in complex hernia and abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) surgery, with exposure to the full range of hernia presentations (inguinal, ventral, incisional, parastomal, and diaphragmatic) and complex tertiary referral patients.
- Gain hands-on experience in joint and minimally invasive procedures for AWR.
- Attend and contribute to the benign OG and AWR multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs).
- Attend the bimonthly AWR MDMs and weekly specialised hernia clinics.
- Lead inpatient ward rounds and work with consultants according to the rota.
- Contribute to the Emergency general surgery on-call service providing night-time cover with responsibilities in A&E, wards, and emergency theatres.
- Participate in the day to day management of patients with benign and malignant oesophago-gastric conditions.
