About us
The GSTT Thoracic Surgery department is one of the UK's largest tertiary referral centres for thoracic surgery and is the treatment provider across 4 Cancer Alliances in South East England (South East London, Thames Valley, Surrey and Sussex, Kent and Medway). Services are provided to DGHs in South East London, Canterbury, Ashford, Maidstone, Medway, Dartford, Reading, and Brighton by the thoracic surgical consultants in line with lung multidisciplinary meeting peer review requirements.
The department has an excellent reputation for post-graduate training in thoracic surgery. We currently undertake in the region of 1600 operative procedures / year.
The department is currently expanding in response to the activity increase following the introduction of Targeted Lung Health Checks (TLHC). TLHC became a national screening programme in 2023 offering low dose CT scans to those assessed as high risk. Where appropriate, patients will be referred to secondary/tertiary care for further investigations and treatment. It is expected to see stage migration with more patients diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer in our lung MDMs, this will contribute to the national ambition for 75% of cancers to be diagnosed at Stage 1 and 2 by 2028. As a result of the programme, there will be a higher proportion of patients who are suitable for curative treatment, in particular a higher number of Thoracic surgery cases.
