Job summary

  • To provide a high quality and responsive delivery of patient care to the patients in PICU.
  • To participate fully in all aspects of the service appropriate to the grade and experience of the potholder.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

  • To manage PICU patients under the supervision of the Chief PICU Fellow and Consultant on Duty.
  • To take part in a full-shift rota which will include being resident when on the night shift.
  • To undertake teaching and guideline development within the fixed rota.
  • To participate in the Paediatric Retrieval rota, initially in a Supernumerary role, the length of which will depend on previous Retrieval experience.
  • To have the opportunity to gain airway and access skills experience in theatres.
  • To participate in the training of the Retrieval Nurse Practitioners.
  • To undertake a P.A.L.S or A.P.L.S Course if have not already done so.

Training of junior staff:

The post holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that post holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching:

There is a structured, formal teaching programme already in place within the PICU.

There are monthly morbidity and mortality meetings

Appointees will also be able to participate in the CME programs within the Departments of Adult ICU, Paediatrics and Anaesthesia.

About us

Department Information:

The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit has 23 beds and admits 1,200 general and cardiac patients each year. The South Thames Retrieval Service operates from within the PICU and receives over 1,750 requests each year and retrieves about 950 of these patients.

The unit is accredited to undertake both Year 1 and Year 2 PICM training. Candidates, who have completed their training, in their parent specialty, may wish to seek employment for 6 months.

Main place of employment:

The post will be based at the Evelina Children's Hospital. However, it is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.
